6 litters of Octodon degus were studied from birth to 10 days of age. Newly-born degus (mean weight 14.6 g) had open eyes, upper and lower pigment, fur, and teeth. Within 3-4 hours of birth they were able to walk supporting their full weight, right themselves rapidly, sit upright on their haunches, or rear upright with support, and vocalize. By the 1st or 2nd day, the young animals displayed functional grooming (face washing, hind-paw scratching, rapid head-shake). Solid food was ingested from day 6, although newborns chewed wood chips and 3-day olds gnawed dried faeces. Young degus were tested daily in an open field apparatus and showed increased activity and exploration, with repeated testing while decreasing distress vocalization after the 4th or 5th day. Degus are proposed for the study of developmental topics since their degree of development at birth allows for immediate testing. The degus studied here seem to be more fully developed at birth than those studied in Britain.

A paucity of data exists regarding sex differences in age‐related obesity and insulin resistance, particularly in the preclinical murine model. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of age and sex on insulin action and body composition in C57BL/6J mice. Aged (AG, 18 months old) male C57BL/6J mice, glucose tolerance was diminished compared to young (YG, 6 months old) male mice (Area Under Curve: 95,103 ± 6818 vs. 64,005 ± 2031, P = 0.002). However, there was no age‐related decline in glucose or insulin tolerance in females. Body composition analysis revealed that AG males had significantly greater body mass (42.2 ± 1.9 vs. 30.0 ± 0.4 g, P < 0.0001), fat mass (18.7 ± 2.0 vs. 3.3 ± 0.4 g, P < 0.0001), body fat (43.0 ± 3.0 vs. 11.0 ± 1.5%, P < 0.0001) than YG males. In AG females, body mass (32.8 ± 1.6 vs. 26.3 ± 0.9 g, P = 0.02) was higher, but fat mass (13.3 ± 2.0 vs. 9.5 ± 1.3 g, P = 0.24) and body fat (37.8 ± 4.8 vs. 35.5 ± 3.8%, P = 0.67) were similar when compared to YG females. AG males had significantly higher body mass (42.2 ± 1.9 vs. 32.8 ± 1.6 g, P = 0.001) and fat mass (18.7 ± 2.0 vs. 13.3 ± 2.0 g, P = 0.04) compared to AG females; however, body fat (43.0 ± 3.0 vs. 37.8 ± 4.8%, P = 0.28) was similar. Six weeks of treatment with MitoQ, a mitochondrial‐targeted antioxidant, did not reverse age‐related obesity in male mice. Surprisingly, obesity and insulin resistance appear to be reversed in the oldest of the old male mice (28 vs. 20 months). Our findings indicate that female mice, unlike males, are protected from age‐related obesity and insulin resistance.

Sixteen untrained males (23 +/- 4 yr), were studied to determine the effects of chromium (Cr) supplementation (200 micrograms.d-1) and a 12-wk resistive exercise training program on muscle strength, body composition, and Cr excretion. The subjects trained 3 times per week with two sets of 8-10 repetitions at 90% of 1 repetition maximum using Keiser variable resistance machines. Food records were used to estimate Cr intake (approximately 36 micrograms.d-1), energy intake, and the percent kJ from protein. The resistive training program resulted in significant increases in total body muscular strength in both the Cr and placebo groups (24% and 33%; P < 0.05). Body weight, percent body fat, lean body mass, and skinfold thicknesses were unchanged in either group after resistive training. Cr excretion increased in the Cr group after 6 wk of Cr supplementation (0.15 +/- 0.08 vs 1.52 +/- 1.26 micrograms.d-1; P < 0.01) and remained higher at 12 wk of training (2.03 +/- 1.73). These results indicate that Cr supplementation, in conjunction with a progressive, resistive exercise training program, does not promote a significant increase in strength and lean body mass, or a significant decrease in percent body fat. Cr supplementation results in a significant increase in Cr excretion that is not altered by resistive training.
