Tests Examining Skill Outcomes in Sport: A Systematic Review of Measurement Properties and Feasibility

Background: A high level of participant skill is influential in determining the outcome of many sports. Thus, tests assessing skill outcomes in sport are commonly used by coaches and researchers to estimate an athlete's ability level, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions or for the purpose of talent identification.Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to examine the methodological quality, measurement properties and feasibility characteristics of sporting skill outcome tests reported in the peer-reviewed literature.Data Sources: A search of both SPORTDiscus and MEDLINE databases was undertaken.Study Selection: Studies that examined tests of sporting skill outcomes were reviewed. Only studies that investigated measurement properties of the test (reliability or validity) were included. A total of 22 studies met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Study Appraisal and Synthesis Methods:A customised checklist of assessment criteria, based on previous research, was utilised for the purpose of this review.Results: A range of sports were the subject of the 22 studies included in this review, with considerations relating to methodological quality being generally well-addressed by authors.A range of methods and statistical procedures were used by researchers to determine the measurement properties of their skill outcome tests. The majority (95%) of the reviewed studies investigated test-retest reliability, and where relevant, inter and intra-rater reliability was also determined. Content validity was examined in 68% of the studies, with most tests investigating multiple skill domains relevant to the sport. Only 18% of studies assessed all three reviewed forms of validity (content, construct and criterion) with just 14% investigating iii Tests examining skill outcomes in sport the predictive validity of the test. Test responsiveness was reported in only 9% of studies, whilst feasibility received varying levels of attention. Limitations:In organised sport, further tests may exist which have not been investigated in this review. This could be due to such tests firstly, not being published in the peer-review literature and secondly, not having their measurement properties (i.e. reliability or validity) examined formally. Conclusions:Of the 22 studies included in this review, items relating to test methodological quality were on the whole, well addressed. Test-retest reliability was determined in all but one of the reviewed studies, whilst most studies investigated at least two aspects of validity (i.e. content, construct or criterion-related validity). Few studies examined predictive validity or responsiveness. While feasibility was addressed in over half of the studies, practicality and test limitations were rarely addressed. Consideration of study quality, measurement properties and feasibility components assessed in this review can assist future researchers when developing or modifying tests of sporting skill outcomes.

RESUMoO objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a necessidade de utilizar protocolo específico para avaliar a capacidade aeróbia de mesatenistas, comparando os testes aplicados em ergômetro específico com ergô-metros convencionais. Para isso, nove mesatenistas foram os participantes do estudo (18,22 ± 2,33 anos; altura de 1,76 ± 0,09m; massa corporal de 67,36 ± 10,03kg; gordura corporal de 14,74 ± 6,69%; e índice de massa corporal (IMC) de 21,69 ± 2,71kg/m 2 ). Foram aplicados os testes de lactato mínimo, realizados no ergômetro de braço (LAC min braço) e no cicloergômetro (LAC min ciclo) (ergômetros convencionais) e o teste de limiar anaeróbio em procedimento específico para o tênis de mesa (LAn espec ) utilizando um lançador de bolas mecânico como ergômetro. Como procedimentos estatísticos foram utilizados o teste de análise de variância (ANOVA) one way e o teste de correlação produto-momento, com nível de significância de 5%. O LAn espec (48,11 ± 6,82 bolas . min -1 ) não foi significativamente correlacionado com a intensidade de LAC min braço (91,94 ± 11,51W) (r = 0,18; p = 0,72); e apresentou correlação negativa com a intensidade de LAC min ciclo (157,97 ± 12,51W) (r = -0,80; p = 0,02). Desse modo, os resultados encontrados no estudo levam a concluir que existe necessidade do uso de protocolo específico para mensurar a capacidade aeróbia no tênis de mesa.Palavras-chave: teste específico, tênis de mesa, ergômetros, limiar anaeróbio, lactato mínimo. aBStRaCtThe aim of this study was to verify the necessity to use a specific protocol for evaluating the aerobic capacity in table tennis players, comparing the tests applied in conventional ergometers with test applied in specific ergometer. Nine table tennis players were participants in the study (18.22 ± 2.33 years; 1.76 ± 0.09 m of height; 67.36 ± 10.03 kg of body mass; 14.74 ± 6.69 % of fat mass and 21.69 ± 2.71 kg/m 2 of body mass index). The participants performed lactate minimum tests in the arm ergometer and cycle ergometer; in addition to incremental test in specific ergometer for determination of the anaerobic threshold (AnTspec) through visual inspection. Statistical procedures used Analysis of Variance test (oneway ANOVA) and the Pearson correlation test, with level of significance of 5%. There was not significant correlation between the AnTspec (48.11 ± 6.82 shots.min-1) and the lactate minimum intensity obtained in arm ergometry (91.94 ± 11.51 W) (r=0.18; p=0.72). The lactate minimum intensity in cycle ergometer (157.97 ± 12.51 W) presented significant correlation with the AnTspec (r=-0.80; p=0.02), but a negative correlation was verified. Therefore, a specific protocol is needed for measuring the aerobic capacity in table tennis.

ResumenEl principal objetivo del entrenamiento de la resistencia en el jugador de tenis de competición es mejorar la habilidad para realizar ejercicios de alta intensidad de manera repetida, recuperarse rápidamente de los esfuerzos y mantener dicha intensidad durante el juego, evitando o retardando de esta manera la aparición de la fatiga. Para el desarrollo de los sistemas energéticos específicos, el jugador debe dirigir los entrenamientos al desarrollo de las vías energéticas y patrones de movimiento que predominan en la competición, respetando en la medida de lo posible la naturaleza intermitente del deporte y la participación muscular específica. El entrenamiento intermitente (EI) es un método adecuado y mejora el nivel de especificidad en relación a los métodos continuos o interválicos largos utilizados tradicionalmente y puede realizarse en la pista de tenis mediante ejercicios específicos. Es importante controlar adecuadamente los parámetros de carga del EI para dirigir adecuadamente las adaptaciones fisiológicas y efectos del entrenamiento a las necesidades del deporte. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión sobre los principales aspectos fisiológicos y parámetros específicos de carga necesarios para una orientación específica del EI para el tenis y proponer un modelo de variabilidad de dichos parámetros de carga en un entorno específico de entrenamiento.Palabras clave: resistencia específica, tenis, entrenamiento intermitente, perfil fisiológico, carga de entrenamiento. AbstractThe main objective of endurance training for competitive tennis players is to improve their ability to repeatedly undertake high intensity exercises, recover quickly from this effort, and maintain this intensity throughout the match, thereby avoiding or delaying the onset of fatigue. In order to develop the specific energy systems, players focus training on the development of the energy paths and movement patterns that are predominant in competition, giving as much consideration as possible to the intermittent nature of the sport and the specific muscular participation. Intermittent training (IT) is a suitable method for tennis and improves the level of specificity with regard to the traditionally-used continuous or interval methods. Also, it can be executed on the tennis court with specific exercises. It is important to monitor the training load parameters appropriately in order to correctly focus the physiological adaptations and effects of training on the needs of the sport. This paper aims to review the main physiological aspects and specific load parameters needed for a specific orientation of IT in tennis. At the same time, it proposes a model of variability of these load parameters in a specific training environment.
