Acne vulgaris is the most common cutaneous disorder affecting adolescents and young adults. Some studies have reported an association between serum zinc levels and acne vulgaris. We aimed to evaluate the serum zinc level in patients with acne vulgaris and compare it with healthy controls. One hundred patients with acne vulgaris and 100 healthy controls were referred to our clinic. Acne severity was classified according to Global Acne Grading System (GAGS). Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to measure serum zinc levels. Mean serum level of zinc in acne patients and controls was 81.31 ± 17.63 μg/dl and 82.63 ± 17.49 μg/dl, respectively. Although the mean serum zinc level was lower in acne group, it was not statistically significant (P = 0.598). There was a correlation between serum zinc levels with severity and type of acne lesions. The results of our study suggest that zinc levels may be related to the severity and type of acne lesions in patients with acne vulgaris. Relative decrease of serum zinc level in acne patients suggests a role for zinc in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.

Background: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease. Structure and amount of lipids in skin, immunological reaction against Malassezia, lipase activity, genetics, environmental factors and stress contribute to the development of the disease, but the pathogenesis is not known precisely. Trace elements play a role in many important functions of organisms. However, the effects of trace elements on skin and adnexal structures are not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to determine the serum zinc, copper, and iron levels as well as the hair zinc, copper, iron, and manganese levels in patients with seborrheic dermatitis and to reveal the relationship between these parameters and seborrheic dermatitis. Materials and methods: 35 female patients with seborrheic dermatitis, aged over 18 years, and 34 healthy females with no known dermatologic or systemic diseases at similar ages were included in the study. Groups were compared in terms of serum and hair trace element levels. Results: When the serum samples of the groups were compared in terms of trace element levels, copper was statistically significantly higher in the seborrheic dermatitis group, but there was no statistically significant difference between zinc and iron levels. Zinc, copper, iron, and manganese levels in the hair samples of the seborrheic dermatitis group were significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion: Results have shown that trace elements can contribute to the pathophysiology of seborrheic dermatitis. Malassezia colonization seen in seborrheic dermatitis, irritation, and inflammation may affect the passage and distribution of trace elements.

ABSTRAKAkne vulgaris merupakan penyakit radang kronik folikel pilosebasea yang banyak terjadi pada remaja. Manifestasi klinis berupa komedo, papul, pustul, nodus dan kista. Akne vulgaris merupakan penyakit yang dipengaruhi oleh banyak faktor, yaitu faktor genetik, lingkungan, hormon, stres, makanan, trauma, kosmetik, obat, serta defisiensi mineral misalnya zink. Kadar zink berpengaruh pada proses inflamasi, aktivitas Propionibacterium acnes, hiperproliferasi unit pilosebasea, dan produksi sebum yang merupakan patogenesis akne vulgaris. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan kadar zink plasma dengan derajat akne vulgaris pada mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Riau. Desain penelitian ini adalah potong lintang analitik. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Riau berjumlah 35 orang berusia > 18 tahun. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan uji korelasi Spearman. Hasil uji statistik kadar zink plasma dengan derajat akne vulgaris menunjukkan hubungan bermakna (p=0,003) dengan kekuatan korelasi sedang (r=-0,490) antara kadar zink plasma dengan derajat akne vulgaris. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin rendah kadar zink plasma maka semakin berat derajat akne vulgaris yang dialami. Acne vulgaris is influenced by many factors, such as genetic, environments, hormonal, stress, diet, cosmetics, drugs, and zinc deficiency. Level of zinc have an effect on inflammatory process, Propionibacterium acnes activity, pilosebacea unit hyperproliferation, and sebum production. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of plasma zinc levels with acne vulgaris severity of medical students at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. The design of this study was analytic observational in the form of cross sectional study. Subject of this research is medical students at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau that consist of 35 students who were aged > 18 years. Result was analyzed statistically using Spearman correlation test. Statistically plasma zinc levels with acne vulgaris severity showed significant correlation (p=0.003) with the strength of correlation is moderate (r=-0.490). This study showed that the plasma zinc level negatively correlated with the severity of acne vulgaris.

Abstract: Our study marks the importance of diet in patients with acne. We offer supportive dietary measures with foods rich in vitamin A and E and zinc in the acne prophylaxis and treatment. Supportive treatment with these vitamins and zinc in severe acne may lead to satisfactory results.
