Evaluation of Semantic and Social Technologies for Digital Libraries

Abstract: Abstract. Libraries are the tools we use to learn and to answer our questions. The quality of our work depends, among others, on the quality of the tools we use. Recently, the semantic web and social networking technologies are being introduced to the digital libraries domain. In this article we present the results of an evaluation of social and semantic end-user information discovery services for the digital libraries.

“…Kruk et al do not really answer this question when evaluating JeromeDL against a standard digital library measuring several traditional aspects like precision / recall and the user satisfaction [21]. The conducted user studies imply that the individual user's satisfaction seems to be higher when using semantic technologies.…”

“…The conducted user studies imply that the individual user's satisfaction seems to be higher when using semantic technologies. However, it has to be pointed out that the results shown in [21] cannot be generalized, since semantic techniques are just as good as the underlying metadata.…”

“…Therefore, ontologies should be widely used in digital library systems. In particular, at least three types of ontologies have been identified as applicable in a specific type of digital libraries -the so-called Semantic Digital Libraries [2,3,4]: bibliographic ontologies, ontologies for content structures (or subject ontologies, according to the term used in this paper), community-aware ontologies. Subject ontologies are useful for supporting the semantic annotation of all types of library resources.…”
