Evaluation of Seed and Fruit Powders of Capsicum annum and Capsicum frutescens for Control of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) in Stored Cowpea and Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch) in Stored Maize

Abstract: Capsicum annum and Capsicum frutescens fruit and seed powders were evaluated in the laboratory for the
control of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) in stored cowpea and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky in stored maize.
Capsicum frutescens seed powder and Capsicum annum seed powder dust were toxic to C. maculatus and
S .zeamais at the rate of 5.0g, 7.5g and 5.0g, per 50g cowpea and 50g maize within 48hrs and 96hrs respectively.
This paper highlights the potential of C. frutescens and C. annum seed…

“…Capsicum frutescens powder and extract were especially quick and effective, reducing oviposition, hatchability and suppressing adult emergence. These observed activities may be its pungency, attributed to the presence of capsacin (Miyakado et al, 1979;Oni 2011;Ashamo & Akinnawo, 2012). The powder and oil of A. occidentales was also very toxic to the survival of S. cerealella: no adults emergedfrom eggs treated with oil.…”

“…This work investigated the efficacy of Capsicum frutescens, Cymbopogon citratus, Moringa oleifera and Anacardium occidentale powders and extracts in the management of the Angoumois grain moth, S. cerealella in stored wheat grains. These plants have been reported to be effective in protecting cowpea seeds and sorghum grains from infestation by cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus and lesser grain borer, R. dominica (Oparaeke & Bunmi 2006;Adedire et al 2011;Oni 2011;Ileke 2012;Ileke & Olotuah 2012).…”
