ABSTRACT. The fungus Pseudocercospora griseola, the causal agent of angular leaf spot in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), exhibits a broad pathogenic variability that complicates the development of resistant cultivars. For breeding programs to successfully obtain common bean cultivars with durable resistance, knowing the aggressiveness of different strains, as well as the mechanisms of genetic resistance, is important. The aims of this study were to study the variation within race 63.63 by evaluating the aggressiveness of different strains, to analyze the genetic resistance of common bean lines to P. griseola, and to ascertain the implications for genetic improvement in obtaining resistance in this pathosystem. Four strains, collected from different locations, were inoculated in three groups of common bean lines in a greenhouse, and the severity of the disease was subsequently evaluated. Statistical analyses were carried out using the diallel method, which provided information on the vertical and horizontal resistance of host plants, in addition to information 5045 Variability in strains of Pseudocercospora griseola ©FUNPEC-RP www.funpecrp.com.br Genetics and Molecular Research 14 (2): 5044-5053 (2015) regarding the aggressiveness of the strains. The aggressiveness of P. griseola differed between the strains of race 63.63. The diallel method proved to be promising for the identification of horizontal and vertical resistance in the common bean-P. griseola pathosystem, with a predominance of horizontal resistance. Gene pyramiding, using marker-assisted selection, may not be the most effective strategy for obtaining durable resistance.

Resultado semelhante foi observado por Silva et al (2008), na avaliação da reação à antracnose de linhagens-elite de sorgo e híbridos simples obtidos pelo cruzamento dessas linhagens, em condições de campo e casa de vegetação.…”

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do uso de multilinhas dinâmicas, por meio de misturas genéticas em populações de híbridos triplos, no manejo da antracnose do sorgo, causada pelo fungo Colletotrichum sublineolum. Foram obtidos 18 híbridos triplos a partir de sete linhagens que continham genes distintos para resistência à doença. Os 25 genótipos de híbridos e linhagens foram avaliados em campo. Verificou-se, em alguns híbridos, grau de resistência superior ao observado para a linhagem mais resistente utilizada nos cruzamentos, o que indica efeito aditivo dos genes de resistência das diferentes linhagens na composição da resistência final dos híbridos. O uso das multilinhas dinâmicas reduziu a intensidade da doença no campo e aumentou a produtividade. Use of dynamic multilines for the management of sorghum anthracnoseAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of dynamic multilines, using genetic mixing in populations of three-way hybrids, in the management of sorghum anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum sublineolum. Eighteen three-way hybrids were obtained from seven different lines containing genes for resistance to the disease. The 25 genotypes of hybrids and lines were evaluated in field conditions. In some hybrids, a higher resistance level was observed when compared to that of the more resistant line used in the crosses, indicating an additive effect of the resistance genes of the different lineages in the composition of the final resistance of hybrids. The use of dynamic multilines reduced the disease intensity in field and increased productivity. This strategy makes it possible to use lineages that have desirable agronomic characteristics, but are susceptible to anthracnose.

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is an important cereal crop grown for its diverse uses. Global sorghum production and productivity is affected by various stresses notably by biotic factors such as diseases, weeds and insect pests. Anthracnose caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum sublineolum Henn. (formerly known as C. graminicola [Ces.] G.W. Wilson), grain mold, leaf blight, rust and smut are among the most import diseases of sorghum, while stem borer, shoot fly, termites and birds are notable pests of the crop. Sorghum anthracnose occurs in epidemic proportions under high temperature and humidity conditions causing yield losses reaching up to 67% in susceptible varieties. Sorghum shows considerable genetic variation. A large number of landraces are exploited in breeding for disease resistance and better agronomic performance. This review presents literature on breeding sorghum for anthracnose resistance and associated challenges and opportunities. Information presented in this paper may guide future breeding of sorghum varieties incorporating farmer needs and preferences.
