Background: Left renal vein (LRV) variations occur in 0.8%-10.2% of the population.The most common LRV variations are retroaortic left renal vein (RLRV) and circumaortic left renal vein (CLRV). The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency of LRV variations in a large series on computed tomography (CT) and to investigate the association between LRV and malignancy development. examination of 12,341 (5,505 female, 6,836 male) patients was evaluated retrospectively in this study. Patients clinical and demographic data were recorded using the Hospital Information System.Results: LRV variations were detected in 314 (2.54%) of the 12,341 patients within the study. Of the 314 cases found to have LRV variations, 227 (1.84%) had RLRV, and 87 (0.70%) had CLRV. There was no statistical difference in total LRV variations (p = .083) and CLRV variation (p = .96) groups in terms of gender. However, the RLRV variation was found to be 1.32 times higher in males than in females (p = .039). Of the 314 patients with LRV variations, 73 (23.2%) had any sort of concomitant malignancy. Conclusions:A high incidence of malignancy was detected in patients with LRV variations. Of the LRV variations, RLRV variation is more common than CLRV variation. The presence of total LRV variations and CLRV variations is not associated with gender. Whereas the presence of RLRV variation is more common in the male gender.

Purpose:To determine the distribution of the types of variations in the portal vein and vena cava inferior and its branches using advanced image processing techniques in contrast enhanced abdominal multislice computed tomography (MSCT) examinations. Methods:The study included 471 patients, comprising 254 males (53.9%) and 217 females (46.1%) with a median age of 53.7 ± 16.1 years, who underwent abdominal MSCT between April 2011 and December 2017.Results: Of 471 patients, 2 patients (0.4%) had variation of the inferior vena cava, 122 patients (25.9 %) had variation of the hepatic vein, 162 patients (34.4%) had variation of the renal vein and 138 patients (29.3%) had variation of the portal vein. Conclusion:It is of great importance to use MSCT prior to surgical procedures such as transplantation, in which vascular variations are predetermined, and to pay attention to variations during reporting of the examination. Computed tomography is increasingly used as a treatment planning method in canine patients with diseases of the retroperitoneum, however, published information on normal variations in the caudal vena cava (CVC) are currently lacking. The objectives of this retrospective descriptive study were to characterize CVC variants using CT angiography in a sample of small breed dogs and localize the CVC bifurcations for each variant. Inclusion criteria were small breed dogs (weight ≤ 15) that underwent contrast‐enhanced CT scans of the CVC, abdominal aorta, and CVC tributaries. A total of 121 small breed dogs were sampled. Four right‐sided and one left‐sided CVC variations were identified: normal (88/121, 72.7%), caudal‐partial split (17/121, 14.0%), partial duplication (8/121, 6.6%), complete duplication (7/121, 5.8%), and left‐sidedness (1/121, 0.8%). The mean lumbar vertebral levels of the CVC bifurcation were L6.39 ± 0.41, L5.70 ± 0.35, L4.39 ± 0.42, L2.74 ± 0.38, and L6.4 in the normal, caudal‐partial split, partial duplication, complete duplication, and left‐sidedness types, respectively. The location of the CVC bifurcation, the relationship between the aortic trifurcation and the CVC bifurcation, and the location of the bilateral deep circumflex iliac veins with respect to the CVC bifurcation were significantly different among the right‐sided types (P ≤ .001). Bilateral deep circumflex iliac veins joined to the ipsilateral common iliac veins and the CVC in the caudal‐partial split and duplication types, respectively. The results of this study indicated that canine CVC variants may be frequent and should be considered during surgery or diagnostic imaging of the retroperitoneum.
