Evaluation of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) Genotypes under Rainfed Mid Hill Environments of Nepal

Abstract: Maize (Zea mays L.) is the second most important staple food crop after rice and a major food crop of the resource poor people in the hills of Nepal. Prevailing normal maize (non-QPM) is deficient in two essential amino acids, lysine and tryptophan. The majority of hill farm families are suffering from protein malnutrition as their major diet is maize and cannot afford animal protein. QPM contains opaque-2, a single gene mutation that alters the protein composition of the endosperm portion and nearly double th… Show more

“…Pixley and Bjarnason (2002) reported 13 per cent higher grain yield in hybrids than OPCS (Open pollinated cultivars) which obtained 9460 kg ha -1 and 9240 kg ha -1 , respectively. Upadhyay et al, (2008) recorded grain yield was significantly highest in 2 QPM hybrids (SO3 TLWQ-AB-01 and Obatampa) than the local check. Similar result also reported by Srivastava et al, (2005) and San Vicente et al, (2005).…”

“…The production of maize in the country is 2,231,517 t with the productivity of 2.5 t/ha (MoAD, 2017). It is the major food crop in the hills of Nepal (Upadhyay et al, 2009), and accounts about 71% of maize production of the country (MoAD, 2017). Furthermore, the share of cereal crops to AGDP is about 49%, and maize alone contributes about 7% to AGDP (MoAD, 2015).…”

“…In 1993, 33 tropical and 22 subtropical QPM lines were released as CIMMYT maize lines (CMLs). In Africa, among the 17 countries that breed and promote QPM to the populace are Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Togo, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Uganda and Senegal (Olakojo et al, 2007;Upadhyay et al, 2009). “…The nutritive value of QPM both as human food, especially for women and children and as animal feed for pigs, poultry and other livestock was widely demonstrated in many countries (Ganesan et al, 2004;Akande and Lamidi, 2006;Upadhyay et al, 2009).
