Evaluation of potato proteins on the growth performance of early-weaned pigs.

Abstract: We conducted five experiments to evaluate conventional and low-glycoalkaloid potato protein (CPP and LGPP, respectively) in diets for early-weaned pigs. In Exp. 1, 150 weanling pigs (initially 4.4 +/- .9 kg and 15.5 +/- 2 d of age) were fed either a control diet containing 3% spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) or diets with additional SDAP (2.5 or 5% added; 5.5 or 8% total) or CPP (2.6% or 5.1%) substituted on a total lysine basis. From d 0 to 14 after weaning, increasing SDAP increased (linear, P < .05) ADG and… Show more

“…The level of inclusion of potato protein concentrate was limited because of its solanine content, which has been proven to impair piglet performance when it is included above 3% in the diet [19]. These sources of protein accounted for 30% of the total dietary crude protein content.…”

“…Potato protein concentrate (PPC) is considered as a valuable source of essential amino acids which can replace animal protein in piglet diets (Kerr et al, 1998;Sardi et al, 2005). According to Kerr et al (1998), piglets fed PPC at 3 to 5% of the diet had satisfactory growth performance but greater additions seemed to decrease feed intake and growth rate.…”

“…According to Kerr et al (1998), piglets fed PPC at 3 to 5% of the diet had satisfactory growth performance but greater additions seemed to decrease feed intake and growth rate. The negative effects of PPC have been attributed to solanidine glycoalkaloids (GA) since weanling piglets tolerated greater amounts of PPC with low than with high GA concentration.…”

“…In order to avoid the consumption of the present raw material, an alternative should be applied. Potato proteins, HP soy concentrate and other raw materials can be used in the production of starter feeds for weaned piglets as alternatives to fish meal (Kasper, 1998;Kerr et al, 1998) without having a harmful effect on piglet productivity (BVDO, 2003).…”
