Evaluation of Pluronic Polyols as Carriers for Grafting Materials: Study in Rat Calvaria Defects

Abstract: Although there were isolated differences, the overall trend was that the pluronic polyol and the mode of administration did not result in a significant change in bone wound healing as measured by the percentage of bone fill. Pluronic polyols may be considered as carriers for osseous graft materials.

“…23 F-127 also enhances early fibroblast attachment and collagen formation that augments the angiogenesis in microcirculation, 18 increasing blood supply to the site of new bone formation. 12 A critical variable in cell-based grafting techniques is the number of cells used for implantation. The use of a larger volume of bone marrow improves bone remodeling and formation, and results in a higher rate of bone union.…”

“…This property makes Pluronic F127 useful for introducing and maintaining a graft at the intended site. 9,12 b-Tricalcium phosphate (b-TCP) and hydroxyapatite (HA), two calcium phosphate ceramics, have been used as biomaterials to construct bone graft substitutes for treating bone defects. 13,14 Interpore, a coralline HA, is an absorbable porous ceramic, which has been used clinically in orthopedic and craniofacial surgeries.…”

“…Poloxamer has been proposed as a carrier for osseous graft material either topically or systemically (113,114). It facilitates early collagen synthesis and microcirculation.…”

“…It facilitates early collagen synthesis and microcirculation. A Poloxamer 407 hydrogel enveloping a non-biodegradable endoskeletal scaffold shows interesting prospects to generate tissue of intricate shape (e.g., human ear) (113,115). Very low concentrations of Poloxamer 188 and Poloxamer 407 increase attachment and growth of human gingival fibroblasts and may have applications in early post surgical wound healing (116).…”

“…21,22 It has been suggested that PF127 can enhance early wound healing in third-degree burns; it has also been considered as a carrier for osseous graft materials and growth factors. 25 PF127 facilitated the spread, attachment and growth of human gingival fibroblasts. 20 PF127 increased transgene expression and is a suitable carrier for regional gene therapy.…”
