Evaluation of penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus

Abstract: Penetrating keratoplasty was done in 104 cases with keratoconus. The donor material were preserved either as a whole eye in moist chamber at 4"C, or as a corueoscleral segment in MK-medium at 4"C, or in a tissue culture. The post-operative observation time varied between 6 months and 9 years. The visual acuity was found to be better than before surgery in 96(Yo, unchanged in 3"%, and worse in l%o of the cases. The average visual acuity was found to be after 6 months 0.25 f SI) 0.2 and after 7 years 0.65 + SI) … Show more

“…The mean follow-up was 11.3 years, during which 90% of grafts remained clear and 73% of the eyes achieved 0.5 or better vision 56. In a 9-year follow-up study, Sayegh et al found the postoperative visual acuity to be better after surgery in 96%, unchanged in 3%, and worse in 1% of the cases 57. Similar results have been reported by other authors 7 58–60…”

“…Postoperatively induced astigmatism after PK can severely limit visual rehabilitation because of anisometropia and visual impairment associated with increased HOAs. 14 To our knowledge, the current study is the first report in the literature that shows the rehabilitation of corneal wavefront aberrations with the use of SCLs after PK. We also aimed to present unwanted events during the follow-up time.…”
