Evaluation of Parathyroid Hormone Bound to a Synthetic Matrix for Guided Bone Regeneration Around Dental Implants: A Histomorphometric Study in Dogs

Abstract: The effect of binding PTH covalently to a synthetic, RGD-modified PEG hydrogel marginally significantly improved bone formation at 2 weeks of healing compared to the use of PEG alone. Bone regeneration within the defects increased in all groups at week 4 of healing without statistically significant differences.

“…Several studies have investigated the effect of PTH on maxillofacial bone healing in animals without osteoporosis (Andreassen and Cacciafesta, 2004;Jung et al, 2007a,b;Valderrama et al, 2010). PTH was applied intermittently in combination with guided bone regeneration in a rat model (Andreassen and Cacciafesta, 2004).…”

“…Dry and ash weight as well as mechanical strength of tissue harvested from the defects were significantly higher with PTH administration. Locally delivered PTH was also used to facilitate bone regeneration (Jung et al, 2007a,b;Valderrama et al, 2010). Polyethylene-glycol matrices carrying PTH were applied to surgically created bony defects surrounding implants.…”
