Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and inflammation mucosal disease. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress damage might be the cause. Malondialdehyd (MDA), one parameter of lipid peroxidation is appropriate for DNA damage in OLP disease.Objective: To evaluate antioxidants and oxidative stress parameters in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) diseases and healthy control group with compare on serum and salivary samples. Material & Methods:The research population included 22 patients with OLP which recently diagnosed and 22 healthy controls matched for periodontal status. Total antioxidant activity (TAA), Malondialdehyde (MDA) or lipid peroxidation product and uric acid (UA) were evaluated in both serum and saliva. The t-tests were used for differences between the two groups in normal distributed variables and also Spearman's rho correlation coefficient for assessing association between serum and salivary fluids.Results: TAA levels in OLP patients showed significant result and lower than healthy control group (p=0.39). Also, results in the saliva MDA concentration, was significantly higher in OLP patients than controls. In correlation test, inverse and significant correlation was observed between the MDA and UA values(r=0. 682, P=0.0001) and a significant correlation was found between serum TAA and UA values. Conclusion:This study showed that OLP groups have higher cellular lipid peroxidation in compare to healthy controls and low level of TAA than controls. Patients with OLP are believed to be more at risk of antioxidant-oxidative stress imbalance.

Background and Design:Various reports have demonstrated an association between inflammatory skin disorders and oxidative stress. Additionally, dyslipidemia and systemic disorders have been found to associate with chronic inflammatory skin diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the oxidative stress parameters and the effect of dyslipidemia on the parameters of oxidative stress in lichen planus (LP). Materials and Methods: Fifty-four patients with LP and 60 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-de nsity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) levels were studied in all participants. After participants with associated systemic diseases were excluded, total antioxidant status (TAS), paraoxonase (PON), arylesterease, stimulated PON and total thiol levels (TTL) levels were studied in 36 patients with LP and control group.

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease that usually causes oral mucosal damage. OLP has been considered to be a potentially malignant disorder associated with an increased risk for oral cancer. Trefoil factors (TFFs) are mainly synthesized by mucin-producing epithelial cells. Expression of TFFs in oral epithelia is thought to be an essential factor in protection against oral mucosal damage. However, very little is known about the connection between tissue damage of oral mucosa in OLP patients and expression of TFFs. Objectives: To determine levels of TFF expression in oral mucosa from patients with OLP. Methods: Tissue samples were collected from 35 patients with normal oral mucosa (controls) and 35 patients with OLP. An immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expression of the 3 TFFs (TFF1, 2, and 3) in mucosal tissues of the oral cavity. Results: TFF2 and TFF3 expression in oral epithelia were significantly decreased in OLP patients (MannWhitney U test; P = 0.006, and P = 0.002, respectively). There were no significant differences in TFF1 expression between OLP patients and control subjects. Conclusion:The present study demonstrated reduced expression of TFF2 and TFF3 in oral epithelia of OLP patients. These outcomes support our previous observations that chronic inflammation may play a major role in downregulation of TFF expression, which may be associated with oral mucosal damage in OLP patients.
