Brief communication (Original). Trefoil factor expression by immunohistochemistry in patients with oral lichen planus

Abstract: Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease that usually causes oral mucosal damage. OLP has been considered to be a potentially malignant disorder associated with an increased risk for oral cancer. Trefoil factors (TFFs) are mainly synthesized by mucin-producing epithelial cells. Expression of TFFs in oral epithelia is thought to be an essential factor in protection against oral mucosal damage. However, very little is known about the connection between tissue damage … Show more

“…The procedure of immunostaining was modified from previous studies by the present authors [28,29]. Briefly, all biopsy specimens were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin upon collection, embedded in paraffin wax, sectioned at 5-mm thicknesses and incubated in a hot-air oven at 60 8 C for 24 h. Deparaffinization of tissue specimens was performed.…”

“…Furthermore, TFF3 (and also little TFF1 and TFF2) is synthesized in the oral mucosal epithelium [16,21]. Expression of TFF2 and TFF3 in oral mucosal tissue is downregulated in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral lichen planus [21,22]. Decreased salivary TFF3 levels were also observed in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and rhonchopathy [23].…”

“…TFF3 is also detectable in parotid ducts [15]. Furthermore, TFF3 is expressed in the oral epithelium and the gingiva [13,16,17,18]. Of note, TFF3 is decreased in patients with chronic periodontitis, oral lichen planus, obstructive sleep apnea, and rhonchopathy [17,18,19].…”
