Evaluation of nutrient uptake and physical parameters on cell biomass growth and production of spilanthol in suspension cultures of Spilanthes acmella Murr.

Abstract: Spilanthes acmella Murr. has a plethora of highly valuable biologically active compounds and has been listed as one of the important medicinal plants of the world. However, no perceptible biotechnological advances have been made for this genus to exploit or enhance its utility. To nullify the effect of seasonal variations, the present report is the first attempt to establish in vitro cell suspension cultures and to evaluate the production of spilanthol from them, a key component of the plant responsible for mo… Show more

“…Plant cell/organ cultures have been perceived as promising choice to traditional plant extraction for obtaining valuable chemicals throughout the year. Particularly, cell suspension culture offers a condensed biosynthetic cycle to study the growth and production kinetics within a short cultivation time (about 2–4 weeks) with an added advantage of tunability that can help to implement optimal conditions for the production of a number of high value medicinal compounds in good quantities [2], [3].…”

“…They are the main constituents responsible for the pharmacological activity (RADUNER et al, 2006). Due to the spilanthol amide, the jambu is widely used in pharmaceutical products, foods and health and body care products (PANDEY &AGRAWAL, 2009;SINGH & CHATURVEDI, 2012).…”

“…Affinin is also the main component in at least five other species of Asteraceae family: Wedelia parviceps [175], Acmella ciliata, A. oleracea, A. oppositifolia [176] and Spilanthes acmella [177,178]. They all have been used as a spice and also in folk medicine since ancient times to cure severe toothache, infections of throat and gums, stomatitis, paralysis of tongue, antiseptic, analgesic, and immunemodulators.…”

“…These Studies in Natural Products Chemistry findings are suggestive that affinin can be a useful inhibitor of inflammatory mediators and is potentially applicable for COX-2 selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [180]. Currently, biosynthesis and production of spilanthol from in vitro cells and tissue cultures of S. acmella are promising tools useful for the purpose of scale-up processes [177,181,182]. Another specie used as anesthetic is Acmella decumbens and its content of alkamides has been established [183].…”
