Evaluation of novel synthetic conditioning polymers for shampoos

Abstract: developed aiming to provide an effective barrier function for hair dye from dissolving into water. The preliminary investigation of a series of polymers with various functional groups indicates that polymers with hydrophobically modified and cationic functionalities are most effective in preventing hair dye dissolution in water. It is also evident that a synergistic effect of the polymer's hydrophobic moieties and cationic charges are important on hair color protection during shampoo washing processes. A prima… Show more

“…HP-Guar is widely used in oil and gas recovery, paints, cosmetics and biology [24] as a thickening and lubricant agent [25,26]. Cationic guar is known for its conditioning properties, notably on hair [27][28][29]. They were obtained by introducing positively charged trimethylamino(2-hydroxyl)propyl into the backbone.…”

“…Cosmetics 2020, 7, x FOR PEER REVIEW 15 of 20 the hair drives the system into the phase-separation region, which results in an enhanced deposition of the conditioning material onto the fiber surfaces. Such deposition is the result of the precipitation of the complexes which favors foaming and enhances the lubrication property of fibers and the adsorption of colloidal materials such as silicone emulsions, impacting consumer satisfaction [105,106]. Figure 9 shows the two approaches commonly used for studying the behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures.…”

“…Mixing other surfactants reduces the anionic charge of AES in the composition and affects the coacervation region. On the other hand, cationic polymers used for shampoo are cationized cellulose Polyquartanium-10 , cationized guar gum 12,35 , and synthetic polymers such as a homopolymer of DADMAC PDADMAC, Polyquartanium-6 , copolymers with DADMAC and acrylamide Polyquartanium-7 36 , and the like. A number of novel synthetic cationic polymers have been developed in order to expand application functions 37 .…”

“…Goddard et al 7 proposed this change in the dissolved state of complexes as a dilution-deposition system. It has also been reported that the precipitated complexes possess functions such as the increase of bubbles 8 10 , reduction of frictional force 11,12 , and adsorption promotion of dispersed colloids like silicone emulsion on hair 12 14 . The precipitated complexes greatly influence the feeling during rinsing and the finish after drying, which are directly recognized by consumers 13,15,16 .…”
