Evaluation of methyl methacrylate monomer cytotoxicity in dental lab technicians using buccal micronucleus cytome assay

Abstract: Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer, a primary component of dental resins, is known to induce cytotoxicity, dermatitis, and neuropathy. The objective of this study was to assess the incidence of micronuclei (MN) in buccal mucosal cells of dental technicians exposed to MMA using Buccal Micronucleus Cytome (BMCyt) assay. The Risk Group (RG=13) consisted of all the technicians working in the prosthetic production laboratory of KKU-College of Dentistry. The Control Group (CG=14) consisted of healthy students and doc… Show more

“…Dental technicians are regularly exposed to dust and organic solvents in the course of their work. Therefore, there is a growing concern about the clinical and professional safety of their use . The aim of this cross‐sectional study was to assess possible local genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of occupational exposure on the buccal mucosal cells of dental technicians.…”

“…To date, few studies have evaluated the effect of dental laboratory materials in vivo, and these studies provided inconclusive results . Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the number of buccal epithelial cells bearing biomarkers that indicate cytogenetic damage in dental technicians compared with dentists and dental assistants.…”

“…But also dental lab technicians manufacturing the dental prostheses were significantly affected by handling the methyl methacrylate monomer especially causing contact dermatitis. In clinical studies, 12.5% of the dental technicians examined showed a positive reaction in the epicutane test, whereas only 1.2% of the patients tested displayed a positive result . Thus, the development and investigation of hypoallergenic denture base polymers is highly desirable.…”

“…It is one of the basic constituent elements of numerous dentistry restorative materials and prosthesis resin. Furthermore, it is utilized as a bone cement in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, to fill the gap in the bones (3). Concerns have been raised about the toxicity of MMA since the early 1940s (4).…”
