Evaluation of methods for estimating energy performance of biogas production

Abstract: This study focused on identifying various system boundaries and evaluating methods of estimating energy performance of biogas production. First, the output-input ratio method used for evaluating energy performance from the system boundaries was reviewed. Secondly, ways to assess the efficiency of biogas use and parasitic energy demand were investigated. Thirdly, an approach for comparing biogas production to other energy production methods was evaluated. Data from an existing biogas plant, located in Finland, … Show more

“…However, there is still an upward trend in the use of this kind of waste. The main industries with biogas generation potential are pulp and paper, sugar and ethanol, abattoirs, dairy, breweries, food, and drink, all of which need to reduce the organic load of their effluents to comply with environmental legislation [27]. Four hundred and twenty-one publications addressing this kind of waste for AD were retrieved, demonstrating that research in the production of gas from industrial waste is still incipient.…”

“…In a properly operated anaerobic digester, the pH is maintained between 6.8 and 7.2, as the volatile acids are converted into methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The pH of an anaerobic digestion process is significantly affected by the CO 2 content of the biogas [21,30,31]. Figure 4 shows the variation of pH with five days' average of the total digestion time.…”

“…They are characterized by high energy-economic indicators, reliable performance, quiet operation, mobility, lack of harmful emissions, etc. Fuel cells can be used as stationary and emergency backup power supply in autonomous systems [3][4][5][6][7]. For loads from a few kilowatts to several hundred kilowatts (consumers in a low housing estate) it is preferred application of low-temperature fuel cells that run on hydrogen.…”
