Evaluation of Layer Adhesion and Uniformity in Poly(lactic acid) and Thermoplastic Starch Multilayered Films

Abstract: Multilayered films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) offer complementary characteristics that are promising for sustainable packaging applications. In this study, an in-house designed three-line coextrusion process was developed to fabricate layered films. These films were produced at varying shear rates and viscosity ratios with and without compatibilizers. Rheological and thermal analyses were used to investigate adhesion strength and uniformity. Results showed the processing shear ra… Show more

“…Materials such as protein (i.e., zein and silk fibroin) and polysaccharides (i.e., starch) are brittle (Shlush & Davidovich‐Pinhas, 2022), which accounts for a major drawback in packaging applications. Hence, innovations in processing techniques are needed to enhance the functionality and performance of sustainable packaging materials (Higginson et al, 2022; Shlush & Davidovich‐Pinhas, 2022).…”

“…11 To overcome the weaknesses of PLA and TPS films, a large number of studies have recently been carried out on the production of two or multilayer films, as well as PLA/TPS blend films. 1,3,[11][12][13] To produce PLA/TPS blend films, both polymers need to be mixed in a molten state at the molecular level and then solidified. However, in a multilayer film, the PLA and TPS phases are separated into distinct layers.…”

“…1,2 Combining different polymers and the proper design of a layered composite provides a cost-effective technique to achieve multiple properties in a single material, depending on the requirements of an application. Some of these properties include corrosion protection, 3 barrier properties, 4 mechanical properties, 5 UV barrier, 6 and heat resistance. 7 The characteristics of multilayer polymers make them perfect candidates for a wide range of applications, including heat shrink sleeves (HSS).…”
