Evaluation of land use-transportation systems with the Analytic Network Process

Abstract: Developments in models and methods of urban systems have increasingly drawn attention to the joint effect of land use and transportation on behavioral and policy relevance, with multicriteria evaluation of and attention to the site-level analysis of spatial impacts. In this paper, we use Saaty's Analytic Network Process (ANP), a systems-oriented method, to contribute to the emerging methodological developments in land use and transportation systems evaluation, planning, and forecasting. e ANP is applied to the… Show more

“…A basic, Saaty's fundamental priority scale is used for determining relative weights of network elements. The validity and applicability of this scale have been proved in several theoretical papers and publications as well as in the implementation of many real problems in the field of transportation (Jharkharia and Shankar, ; Longo et al., ; Banai, ; Brozova and Ruzicka, ).…”

“…As an analytical technique, most of these studies (e.g. Banai, 2010;Ravi, Shankar and Tiwari, 2005) have indicated the effectiveness of the ANP method in their application areas as it allowed for interdependence and interrelationships among the factors and indicators used and further measured dependencies among them. ANP can be used as a tool for making predictions under uncertainty (Banai, 2010, Nekhay, Arriaza andBoerboom, 2009) and have been applied in conjunction with other mathematical modelling techniques (Yang et al, 2008).…”

“…Within the context of multicriteria decision-making in transportation, Banai [67] developed a model to assess a Light Rail Transit (LRT) corridor and route alternatives using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) [68] with a set of criteria for policy objectives. Banai [69] applied the Analytic Network Process (ANP) [70] to the light rail route selection with station area land use and property value among the multiple criteria. Taleai et al [34] introduced an Integrated Spatial Equity Evaluation (ISEE) framework based on spatial multicriteria analysis to evaluate equitable access to several basic services used mostly by children.…”
