Evaluation of Lameness Associated with Arthroscopy and Arthrotomy of the Normal Canine Cubital Joint

Abstract: The results of this study suggest that postoperative morbidity should not be a factor when making a decision to perform either arthroscopy or arthrotomy for exploration of the medial compartment of the canine cubital joint.

“…Stifle arthroscopy with meniscal probing is the gold standard for the diagnosis of medial meniscal pathology, with a low complication rate and low postoperative morbidity . In contrast, canine stifle arthrotomy is more invasive and less diagnostically sensitive . In a study examining the effects of ligament grafts on the canine stifle, investigators discovered that performing a medial arthrotomy as the sole (sham) procedure on normal stifles resulted in osteoarthritis and degenerative ligament changes in these previously naïve joints .…”

“…In a study examining the effects of ligament grafts on the canine stifle, investigators discovered that performing a medial arthrotomy as the sole (sham) procedure on normal stifles resulted in osteoarthritis and degenerative ligament changes in these previously naïve joints . However, stifle arthrotomy offers advantages in setup time, and requires less expensive equipment and specialized training . The mini‐arthrotomy may be preferred to the full arthrotomy due to preservation of the quadriceps muscles, suggesting less postoperative morbidity, and may reduce the risk of postoperative medial patellar luxation .…”

“…Gait evaluation is typically documented in the medical record through specific descriptive observations and subjective lameness scores that allow consistency and unambiguous communication between veterinary practitioners. Lameness scores are additionally used in conjunction with other outcome measures, such as force plate analysis, to evaluate the effect of intervention on lameness …”

“…The authors observed marked superiority of intraarticular bupivacaine over morphine. Bubenik et al (2002) compared arthrotomy to arthroscopy with regard to the presence of postoperative pain, expressed as lameness, in dogs. No significant differences between groups were observed.…”
