Evaluation of Kock Urinary Reservoir Function in Children and Adolescents at 3-10 Years' Follow-up

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate Kock reservoir function in children and adolescents operated for congenital urinary incontinence and to determine the complication rate. Reservoir function was investigated in 13 children (age range 10.8-16 years) and 7 adolescents (age range 16-18 years) through enterocystometry, enterocystoscopy and patient history. Patients were followed up for 3-10 years. The follow-up was reported as early (3 months-2 years) and late (2-10 years) postoperative periods. At early follow… Show more

“…In the present series, the problems of leakage, mucous secretion, urinary odor, crust formation, skin ulceration and/or redness were minimal and our patients were not concerned about them to any considerable degree. However, dif culty with inserting the catheter or anxiety about catheterization was experienced by some patients and resulted in reservoir perforation in 2 patients, as we have reported previously (15). Diarrhea was a minor problem for about half of patients and a major one for 1 patient.…”

“…Using the Kock pouch in 20 children and adolescents, Abd-el-Gawad et al reported, in ten of 13 children (77%) and in three of seven adolescents (43%), pouch-related complications (calculus formation in six patients, stoma prolapse in three, angulation of the efferent segment in six, reflux in two, deterioration of renal function in eight, stoma stenosis in three) after a follow-up period of 6.5 years [20,21].…”

“…It turned out, however, that the construction is quite complicated. After a median follow-up of “only” 6.5 years, Abd-el-Gawad et al reported pouch-related complications in 10 out of 13 children and 3 out of 7 adolescents (102, 103). If the principle is transferred to the ileocecal pouch and the invaginated nipple which is additionally fixed in the ileocecal valve, the complication rate is reduced (91).…”
