Evaluation of Insulin Permeability and Effects of Absorption Enhancers on Its Permeability by an in Vitro Pulmonary Epithelial System Using Xenopus Pulmonary Membrane.

Abstract: The permeability of insulin across Xenopus pulmonary membrane and the effects of various absorption enhancers on insulin permeability were examined using an in vitro Ussing chamber technique. Absorption enhancers used in this study were sodium caprate (NaCap), sodium glycocholate (NaGC), sodium salicylate (NaSal) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA). The permeability of insulin across Xenopus pulmonary membrane significantly increased in the presence of NaCap and NaGC, while EDTA and NaSal … Show more

“…Interstitial eff ect of insulin due to diff usion was cited in toad urinary bladder ( Cox and Singer, 1977 ). Weak interstitial eff ect was observed in this study possibly due to diff usion, ( Sugahara et al, 1984, Yamamoto et al, 2001, Carstens et al, 1993 or because of remnants of fat tissue or blood clots ( Ribiere et al, 2002 ). Insulin is suggested to eff ect on airway smooth muscles via a NO formation pathway ( Hatzoglou et al, 2001 , Papayianni et al, 2001 ).…”

“…Interstitial effect of insulin due to diffusion was cited in toad urinary bladder [11]. Weak interstitial effect was observed in this study possibly due to diffusion [14, 15] or because of remnants of fat tissue or blood clots [16]. In kidney cells insulin is known to stimulate amiloride-sensitive Na + channels when added apically [6, 7, 11].…”
