Evaluation of Influence of Briquetted Synthetic Slags on Slag Regime and Process of Steel Desulphurization

Abstract: This paper presents the industrial results of evaluation of efficiency of synthetic slags during the treatment of steel at the equipment of the secondary metallurgy under conditions of the steel plant VÍTKOVICE HEAVY MACHINERY a.s. The aim of the heats was to assess the influence of the briquetted and sintered synthetic slags based on Al 2 O 3 aiming the course of the steel desulphurization and slag regime during the production and treatment of steel grade 42CrMo4 with the technology EAF→LF→ VD. Within the pla… Show more

“…Within the BOF process, the possibilities of desulfurization are significantly limited by the oxidation conditions. The sulfur distribution coefficient from the first ladle slag at the beginning of the secondary metallurgy process already has higher desulfurization potential, due to the reduction conditions within the slag phase caused by slag modifiers, synthetic slags and the deoxidation of the steel itself during tapping [20,21].…”

“…The parameters influencing the degree of desulphurisation during secondary steelmaking process are reported to be sulphur partition ration (L s ), basicity (B 2 ), Mannesmann index (MM), CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratio (C/A) in slag and easily reducible oxide content (ERO) [16]. Comparison of the above parameters indicated no significant difference between regular and trials heats (Table 7).…”

“…Elimination of the non-metallic inclusions is one of the secondary refinery functions in the steel production process. This process is based on the non-metallic inclusions washout principle into the slag volume [24,25]. Elimination of the non-metallic inclusions is based on the liquid metal bubbling principle by inert gas in the bubbling and rinsing process [26][27][28].…”
