Evaluation of IEEE 1394 serial bus for distributed data acquisition

Abstract: One trend in accelerator instrumentation is the digitization of signals further upstream in the signal processing chain. In some systems, this leads to distributed data sources that must be interconnected in a standard way. IEEE 1394 Serial Bus provides a possible interconnection standard for these systems. With Serial Bus, data acquisition is implemented via memory to memory transfers within a distributed 64 bit address space. Because this functionality is provided in silicon, software overhead is significant… Show more

“…One such application [64] uses Firewire for distributed data acquisition in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) beam position monitoring. All this formed a sophisticated control system, with four independent Firewire position monitoring devices connected to each of several VMEbus control systems.…”

“…Each analog sampler resides on a circuit board that also contains the data acquisition hardware. Each board includes two 16-bit digitizers, a fixed point digital signal processor (DSP) subsystem, an in-system programmable gate array, a beam synchronous timing interface, and an IEEE1394 Serial Bus (Firewire) interface (15). Two boards are packaged together in each module, but each board functions as a completely independent position channel.…”

“…Among many popular standards available, the IEEE1394 Serial Bus, also known as FireWire, offers a reasonable trade-off between cost and performance [13] and some good features for real-time industrial applications such as electrical power network simulation and distributed data acquisition systems [14].…”

“…Among several previous works [14,16] and standards on real-time communications, the IEEE1394 Serial Bus has been chosen for our approach because it offers a reasonable trade-off between cost and performance [13], some good time-driven features, and its popularity.…”
