Evaluation of Pistia stratiotes fractions as effective larvicide against Anopheles mosquitoes

Abstract: Mosquito are well-known vectors that cause diseases particularly malaria and filariasis which are detrimental to human health. These vectors occur mainly in tropical countries where more than 2 billion people live in endemic regions with about one million deaths been claimed yearly from malaria and filariasis. The study is aimed at evaluating the larvicidal activity of Pistia stratiotes fractions on Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). The ethyl acetate extract of P. stratiotes was obtained through perco… Show more

“…(9,10) . Previously, several reported outcomes extremely supported with present research, the mosquito larval toxicity potential of various phyto-compositions against different mosquitoes (17)(18)(19) . Similarly, present investigation authentically supported by many of the previously published research explorations against pupae of vector mosquitoes, the various phyto-products (extract/essential oil/phyto-compound) of Helicteres velutina (20) , Lavandula latifolia (7) showed hyper toxicity against pupae of various vectors mosquitoes.…”

“…An ethyl acetate extract obtained from the leaves of Pistia stratiotes was reported to have low toxicity towards A. salina at a concentration of 602.03 mg.L − 1 (Ma et al, 2019) however the time of exposure was not reported. This study was focused on the effectiveness of different fractions of the extract against Anopheles mosquitoes and so the concentrations that showed to be the most effective towards the mosquito was the one tested towards A. salina as a non-target species.…”

“…Aside from the analgesic uses of invasive plants, the results in Table 1 show that invasive plants are also used as antimicrobials (Kakarla et al 2014), anti-inflammatory medicine (Karale et al 2013;Syed et al 2018), diuretics (Bansal et al 2019), tonics (Jain 2017), antimalarial drugs (Oladimeji et al 2008;Ma et al 2019), and antidermatophytic medication (Premkumar and Shyamsundar 2005), among others. Before the scientific exploitation of invasive plants for their phytochemical constituents as medicine, local knowledge was available on the usage of some invasive plants for medicinal purposes.…”
