Evaluation ofp-cymene, a natural antioxidant

Abstract: Context: Several studies have demonstrated that essential oils and their major components have antioxidant activity. p-Cymene is a monoterpene and a major constituent of essential oils of various species of plants. Objective: This paper evaluated the antioxidant potential of p-cymene in the hippocampus of mice by determining the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitrite content, and activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Materials and methods: Swiss mice were intrap… Show more

“…Additionally, p ‐cymene is a monoterpene and a constituent of a number of essential oils such as Z. multiflora with antioxidant activity. The antioxidant effect of p ‐cymene in the hippocampus of mice indicated reduction effect of p ‐cymene on lipid peroxidation and nitrite content levels as well as increased CAT and SOD activities in mice hippocampus . The described studies indicate that other constituents of the plant such as linalool, γ‐terpinene, and p ‐cymene also contribute to antioxidant property of Z. multiflora .…”

“…In another study, anethole induced apoptosis, and combinations of anethole with cisplatin and oxaliplatin were highly synergistic (29). There are several other examples of phenolics such as p-cynene (ajowan and cumin), limonene (celery and caraway), thymol (ajowan) and β-pinene (cumin and celery) that have been shown to possess high antioxidant properties (3032). In addition, the biological properties of polar and non-polar compounds from spices have been reviewed (3335).…”

“…SOD plays an important role in scavenging toxic intermediates of incomplete oxidation, which is regarded as one of the most primary antioxidant enzymes in the enzymatic defense mechanism (de Oliveira et al 2015). GSH, an abundant tripeptide in liver, is an important defense molecule against oxidising xenobiotics such as free radicals, peroxides and akylating agents, playing a pivotal role in the detoxification processes.…”
