Understanding coexistence between humans and threatened wildlife is a central focus in conservation. Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra Island, Indonesia, harbors one of the largest populations of the critically endangered Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus). The people who live alongside this population are affected by intensive crop foraging. Our study investigated the factors which influenced attitudes toward elephants. We then evaluated the implications of reported attitudes for future willingness to live with elephants. We surveyed 660 respondents in 22 villages around the park. People generally reported positive attitudes toward elephants (smartness 95%, usefulness 62%, importance 57%, and pleasantness 53%), apart from where human safety was concerned (safety 11%). Each dimension of attitude was explained by different factors including age, gender, knowledge of elephants, and distance to crop foraging locations. Most respondents (62%) expressed no willingness to coexist with elephants. Such willingness was lower when elephants were perceived to be more dangerous, but higher if beliefs in the benefits of elephants were greater. Efforts to improve crop foraging mitigation practice and to increase people's awareness of elephant benefits may promote support for their conservation. Through this study, we advocate the integration of social science to promote human-wildlife coexistence strategies, an approach that is currently limited in Indonesia.

Vegetasi Taman Nasional Way Kambas (TNWK) rusak menyebabkan gajah liar keluar dari hutan untuk mencari makan sehingga menyebabkan tanaman petani rusak. Gajah juga menyerang manusia dan terdapat korban jiwa meninggal dunia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui mitigasi konflik gajah dan manusia di Desa Tegal Yoso Kecamatan Purbolinggo Kabupaten Lampung Timur. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat perbedaan mitigasi konflik gajah dan manusia menurut mitigasi struktural terdiri dari kanal, pagar penghalang, dan gubuk (menara) menunjukkan bahwa gubuk (menara) lebih efektif. Terdapat perbedaan mitigasi non struktural terdiri dari peta jalur masuk gajah, patroli, lampu belor, api unggun, mercun, peralatan bunyi-bunyian, mencari jejak gajah liar masuk ke lahan pertanian, dan penggiringan menggunakan gajah jinak menunjukkan bahwa peralatan bunyi-bunyian dan mercun lebih efektif.

Conflict between elephants and humans occurs almost every year in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. This study aims to determine the characteristics of Human-Elephant conflict in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency and its mitigation techniques. Data collection was carried out by purposive sampling. Purposive sampling was conducted by interviewing respondents who had experienced conflicts with elephants. Based on the interviews results, the Human-Elephant conflict occur almost every year where in the 2000s there were many conflicts between elephants and humans and now in 2021 and 2022 there is a decline in elephant-human conflicts. This is because the elephants in Pinggir District have moved to other locations such as the Giam Siak Kecil enclave. The results of the interview also informed that only certain locations experienced conflict between elephants and humans, especially the paths that were often traversed by elephants. Mitigation techniques that are mostly done by the community in dealing with conflicts with elephants are the sounds of using firecrackers and cannons, evictions and gardening by the community and making elephant trenches for people who have strong capital.
