Evaluation of Hematological Profile in Oral Submucous Fibrosis

Abstract: Background: The aim of the study is to assess the hematological profile in oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) patients. Methods: The study's participants (100) were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of fifty areca nut chewers with complaints of burning sensations, blanching, and stiffness of the oral mucosa. Group II consisted of fifty healthy patients as controls. A hematological profile was estimated in all subjects. Results: The control group had a mean hemoglobin (Hb) of 13.87±1.26 g/dL, while the OSMF … Show more

“…In the present study, few patients with OSMF had an increased ESR, iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, as also observed in a previous study ( 16 ). OSMF can be identified as a collagen metabolic disorder that arises from the excess production of extensively interconnected insoluble collagen type I. Collagen hydroxylation requires the presence of ferrous iron and ascorbic acid.…”

“…Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is known to be one of the most common premalignant conditions of the oral cavity, characterized by its wide involvement of the oral region, including the pharynx and oropharynx that can lead to tissue scarring, dysphagia, and trismus. [ 1 ] The disease is considered to be of multifactorial etiology, with areca nut (AN) being the most predominant causative agent.…”

“…Serum iron may be employed as a possible prognostic and diagnostic marker in OSMF sufferers, according to the study's calculations. 8 The greatest existing weapon in the battle against oral cancer seems to be the early identification of pre-malignancies and stopping them from developing into malignancy. A thorough research may be conducted to determine the serum iron levels in individuals with OSMF.…”
