The prevalent symptoms of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) are a burning sensation and trismus. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of placentrex, hyaluronidase and dexamethasone, and their combination in the treatment of OSMF. For this purpose, 160 patients with OSMF were divided into four groups (each with 40 patients at a 1:1:1:1 allocation ratio). The patients in group 1 (control) received only oral supplements, along with regular mouth-opening exercises; patients in group 2 received an injection of placental extract; patients in group 3 were injected with hyaluronidase and dexamethasone; and patients in group 4 received a combination of injections from groups 2 and 3. The injections were administered once weekly for 12 weeks and patients were followed-up for 12 months. The data of the patients (mouth opening ability and a burning sensation) were analyzed using ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The maximum increase in mouth opening (7.30±0.80 mm) was noted in group 4, and the lease increase was observed in the control group (0.37±0.16 mm), from baseline levels to the end of the 12th week. The maximum relapse in mouth opening of 1.62±0.45 mm was noted in group 2, and a minimum relapse of 0.20±0.08 mm was noted in group 4. On the whole, the present study demonstrates that the intralesional injection of a combination of the three drugs (placentrex, hyaluronidase and dexamethasone) in addition to the use of oral supplements and mouth opening exercises has a high level of efficacy in improving trismus and burning sensation in patients with OSMF.

A BSTRACT Aims and Objectives: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is known to be one of the most common premalignant conditions of the oral cavity. Areca nut (AN) is considered to be the disease’s primary cause, while there are other potential causes as well. However, routine clinical practice has revealed that not all people who chew AN exhibit clinical signs of OSMF, and few people are reported to have it even without chewing AN. So, there must be other factors contributing to OSMF. Plasma fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs) have recently been discovered to be an early sign of this disease, indicating a potential link between the two. This review aims to examine the studies which have been published in the literature that explain the role of plasma FDPs in contributing to OSMF. Materials and Methods: An electronic search of the published literature was performed without publication year limitation in PubMed/ Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Embase, and Research gate databases, using mesh keywords like (‘Oral submucous fibrosis’ OR ‘Oral submucous fibrosis’) AND (‘Fibrinogen degradation products’ OR ‘Plasma fibrinogen degradation products’) AND (‘Clinical grades’ OR ‘Histological grades’) AND (‘Diagnosis’). A manual search of all related journals was also done. We also referred to the reference lists of papers. The risk of bias was evaluated with the GRADE criteria (from the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation Working Group). Results: The search revealed a total of 12 relevant studies from 1979 to 2022. Nine out of 12 studies demonstrated the definite presence of plasma FDPs in such cases. Conclusions: Although the studies documented in the literature showing evidence of plasma FDPs in patients with OSMF are very few in number, their detection signifies an important clinical finding. More research is still required in this aspect to establish stronger evidence.

Objective: To compare the serum levels of iron in Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) and normal healthy subjects. Subject and Methods: A total of 120 patients with symptoms and signs suggestive of OSMF equally divided into two groups named group A and B. Patients satisfying the insertion norms and those who has oral sub mucous fibrosis and the control group who are willing to get participate and getting done their blood tests for other purpose were asked for additional iron serum test for our research purpose. The demographic and medical factors like gender, pain, age, and medical record was known and logged in proforma. Diagnosis was done on clinical basis and was categorized according to progress then blood sample was obtained. The data was examined using SPSS version 20.0. Results: Control group's descriptive (standard/healthy) statistics indicate the mean iron levels of iron 94.13 ug/dl, while standard deviations are 17.57ug/dl. On the 1st day, 2nd day and 3rd day serum levels are examined, which reveal the mean values of 28.02, 22.81 and 24.0 ug/dl, respectively. The findings indicate a greater average of iron (17.57) in the healthy group (group B), while considerably less mean of iron level (6.47) in patients who have OSMF (group A). Conclusion: The study concluded that OSMF have lower levels of the iron in the serum while higher levels in the healthy group. Keywords: Serum Iron Level, Oral Submucous Fibrosis, Estimation
