Exogenous sources and the superposition effect of HMs in agricultural soils made the idenfication of sources complicated in a karst area. Here, a typical watershed, a research unit of the karst area, was chosen as the study area. The smaller-scale study of watersheds allowed us to obtain more precise results and to guide local pollution control. In this study, sources of HMs in agricultural soil were traced by a CMB model. Superposition effects were studied by spatial analysis of HMs and enrichment factor (EF) and chemical fraction analysis. The average concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in surface soils were 8.71, 333, 154, 51.7, 61.5 and 676 mg∙kg−1, respectively, which exceeded their corresponding background values. The main sources of Cd, Pb and Zn in agricultural soil were rock weathering, atmospheric deposition and livestock manure, and their contributions were 47.7%, 31.0% and 21.2% for Cd; 7.63%, 78.7% and 13.4% for Pb; and 17.0%, 52.3% and 28.1% for Zn. Cr mainly derived from atmospheric deposition (73.8%) and rock weathering (20.0%). Cu and Ni mainly came from livestock manure (81.3%) and weathering (87.5%), respectively, whereas contributions of pesticides and fertilizers were relatively limited (no more than 1.04%). Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu were easily enriched in surface soils near the surrounding pollution sources, whereas Cr and Ni were easily enriched in the high-terrain area, where there was less of an impact of anthropogenic activities. The superposition of exogenous sources caused accumulation of Cd, Pb and Zn in topsoil, contaminated the subsoil through leaching and improved bioavailability of Cd and Pb, causing high ecological risk for agricultural production. Therefore, Cd and Pb should be paid more attention in future pollution control.

Anthropogenic activities in urban, agrarian, or industrial areas are the main cause of heavy metals in sediments worldwide. Since the 1960s, there have been submarine discharges through outfalls of poorly treated or untreated wastewater on the south coast of Mallorca island (Mediterranean Sea). In this study, the pollution of marine sediments is analyzed at a great number of points on the south of the seacoast. Heavy metal concentrations of As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn, total inorganic carbon (TIC), sulfur, mineralogy, and grain size were analyzed. The objective is to evaluate the concentrations of toxic substances and their spatial distribution and ranges that can negatively affect marine ecosystems and human health. In addition, the results obtained have been compared with standardized indices for marine sediments, and a regional index has been developed with the background values of heavy metals obtained in the sediments of the study area. To obtain consistent conclusions, concentrations of heavy metals were classified with the Igeo Index. The concentrations of heavy metals obtained show that a great number of samples exceeded the limits considered for uncontaminated sediments according to the index applied. Elements such as Hg, Ba, Pb, and Cu showed high concentrations close to the outfalls and lower concentrations in zones far from these points. To support the assessment, chemical processes such as dissolution or chemical precipitation have been studied. The results also show that marine sediments can be a good trap for chemical elements and a good proxy to analyze the impact of anthropogenic activities in areas heavily pressured by humans, and the risk to the environment and human health.

There has been a growing interest in the use of Shilajit powder as an adjuvant for the treatment of various ailments. This study sought to evaluate the preventive and restorative potentials of Shilajit in a model of spleen toxicity induced by mercury chloride in rats and its effects on the MLH1 gene expression. Four groups of twenty male Wistar rats (n =5) were created at random. Group, I was the untreated control group. Group II was given an intraperitoneal (IP) dose of HgCl2 at 1mg/kg body weight for 3 weeks. Group III was given an oral dose of Shilajit extract (500 mg/ kg b.w) daily for 3 weeks and then HgCl2 at a dose of 1 mg/kg b.w /IP daily for 3 weeks. Group IV received an oral dose of 500 mg/kg body weight of Shilajit extract for 3 weeks after receiving an IP dose of HgCl2 at 1 mg/kg body weight for 3 weeks. Bodyweight, relative spleen weight, hematological parameters, tissue oxidative stress, the expression of the MLH1 gene, and spleen histology were evaluated. The results showed that HgCl2 administration to rats altered the hematological parameters and spleen histology in addition to leading to a decrease in the spleen's GSH content and an increase in lipid peroxidation. However, the oral administration of Shilajit in the preventive model showed more potency in preventing the toxicity caused by HgCl2 exposure. Therefore, more research is required to clarify the restorative potentials of Shilajit on HgCl2-induced spleen toxicity.
