The present study investigated the most appropriate footprint index and its related parameters for the diagnosis of flatfoot, especially in cases with mild deformity. Methods: In total, 148 footprints were recorded from 77 young women with flatfoot. Footprints were classified into three groups of mild, moderate, and sever. Footprint indexes included Sztriter-Godunov (KY), Clarke's Angle (CA), Chippaux-Smirak Index (CSI), and Staheli (ST) indexes. The mentioned indexes and their relevant parameters were calculated on the footprints in the aforementioned groups. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify proper components for the diagnosis of flatfoot. By multivariate analysis of variance, between-group differences were assessed. A Chi-squared test was used to identify the most accurate index for the diagnosis of mild flatfoot. Results: Exploratory factor analysis based on the parameters of footprint indexes identified three essential components. Two identified components were based on the 6 parameters of CSI, KY, and ST indexes in moderate and sever footprints. The third component was related to footprints with mild grading and was composed of three extracted parameters from midfoot region. Moreover, the linear combination of the three last parameters suggested a significant difference between three groups (P<0.01). Eventually, KY index could identify the highest number of flatfoots in the mild group (P=0.000). Conclusion: Study findings revealed that indexes in which parameters were extracted from midfoot region could be suitable for the diagnosis of mild flatfoot. KY index's parameters were extracted from midfoot. Considering that KY could identify several remarkable mild flatfoots in comparison with other indexes, we can introduce it as a proper index.

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have a higher prevalence of falls compared with the healthy population. Several risk factors of falls in RA have been postulated, including high disease activity, low balance, muscle weakness and non-treatment with biologics. Aim of the work We investigated our hypothesis that the sonographically detected ankle and foot changes in RA patients can predict falls in this population. To our knowledge, no previous study had investigated this before. Methods In a total of 101 RA patients, we performed assessments of disease activity, disability level, gait speed, balance status, clinical examination of ankle and foot and an MSUS assessment of the ankle and foot joints and tendons as possible risk factors of falls. Results The Berg balance test had the highest fall-predicting power (71.3%), followed by a gait speed test and restricted range of motion (ROM) of the Rt. subtalar joint, each with a predictive power of 70.3%. Of the sonographic findings, erosion of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint was the most accurate fall predictor, followed by erosion of the talonavicular joint and tenosynovitis of the ankle dorsal flexors with an area under the curve of 0.656, 0.642 and 0.614, respectively. Conclusion The use of the MSUS as an adjunct objective method for predicting falls in RA patients has not been studied before. It was found that clinical foot and balance testing was a superior and easier way of predicting falls in RA patients than using ultrasonography.

Pes planus and pes cavus are the two common foot conditions, which fascinate the attention of researchers. A deviation from normal foot arch structure is associated with unstable gait. This study aims at assessing the staheli arch index (SAI) of Jharkhand tribal children. This study was carried out on children belonging to various tribal groups of Ranchi and Angara districts of Jharkhand. Graphical footprints of the study subjects were recorded and assessed using SPSS-16. The mean right SAI was 0.63 and 0.61 for right and left foot respectively. The mean right SAI was significantly greater than that of left foot. Gender differences in mean SAI was statistically insignificant at p<0.05. The mean SAI of 0.75 and 0.76 at the age of 3:<4 years was reduced to 0.64 and 0.61 by 14:<15 years age for right and left foot respectively. There was insignificant correlation of SAI with age and body mass index (p < 0.05).
