Aim:Various chemical solutions have been recommended for denture disinfection; however, the immersion effect on the properties of denture base resin may also have effect on strength of the resin material. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare and evaluate the flexural strength of heat-cure acrylic denture base resin by combination method of denture cleansing and plant extract immersion.Materials and Methods:In this study, ninety specimens of heat-cure acrylic denture base resin material were fabricated with dimensions of 65 mm × 10 mm × 3.3 mm. The specimens were divided into three groups, namely, Group I–III of thirty specimens each and were immersed in distilled water, denture cleanser, and thyme essential oil, respectively. The flexural strength of specimen was evaluated.Results:Natural plant extract showed better flexural strength than immersed in denture cleanser and control group but statistically was not significant.Conclusion:The study concluded that plant extract, namely, thyme essential oil, showed better flexural strength than combination method and can be used as denture cleanser.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of ZrO 2 nanoparticles incorporation (in two different ratios 1% and 3%) on some properties of one high-impact heat cured PMMA resin material when it was processed by two different methods (Conventional and Microwave curing methods). Materials & Methods: One high-impact heat cured PMMA resin (Trevalon Hi) was used in this study to be modified with nano-ZrO 2 in two different ratios (1% and 3%). Both unmodified and modified high-impact heat cured PMMA resin were subjected to three different tests (Flexural strength test, Microhardness test, and Color stability test). A total of ninety specimens were prepared, thirty specimens for each test (N=30). Within each test specimens, there were three groups (n=10), (HI) group: was prepared from high-impact heat cured PMMA resin without modification by nano-ZrO 2 (as a control group). (1%n-ZrO 2 HI) group: was prepared from high-impact heat cured PMMA resin modified by 1% nano-ZrO 2. (3%n-ZrO 2 HI) group: was prepared from high-impact heat cured PMMA resin modified by 3% nano-ZrO 2 .Within each group, five specimens were prepared by conventional water-bath curing method, while the other five specimens were prepared by microwave curing. The significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05. Statistical analysis was performed with IBM® SPSS® Statistics Version 20 for Windows. Results: Modification of high-impact heat cured PMMA resin with (1% and 3%) nano-ZrO 2 resulted in significant increasing in the mean values of flexural strength and VHN of all tested groups (p<0.05), while the effect on the color stability of the resin was slight. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, modification of high-impact heat cured PMMA resin with zirconia nanoparticles up to 3% could improve the flexural strength and surface microhardness with slight effect on the color. Microwave curing of high-impact heat cured PMMA resin gives better results than conventional one.

We evaluated the effect of toothbrush/dentifrice brushing on the weight variation and surface properties of different denture bases. Four denture base materials (conventional heat cure, high impact, CAD/CAM, and polyamide resins) were subjected to toothbrushing abrasion (50,000 strokes). The weight value, surface roughness, and topography of each group were determined before and after toothbrushing. The hardness was measured by the Vickers hardness test. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni tests. After toothbrushing, the weight of the polyamide resin had significantly increased; significant weight losses were observed for conventional heat cure and high impact resins, but none for the CAD/CAM resin. The surface roughness of each group increased significantly owing to the wear caused by toothbrushing. The weight variation and surface roughness were not affected by the hardness. Our results suggested that denture base materials deteriorate after brushing with toothpaste, in which the polyamide resin exhibited lower levels of abrasion.
