Evaluation of Estrogen Receptor β Binding of Pruni Cortex and Its Constituents

Abstract: The bark of Prunus jamasakura Siebold (Pruni Cortex) has long been used in Japan as a folk remedy and is one of ingredients of the Kampo formula, Jumi-haidoku-to (JHT). JHT is used for treatment of skin diseases such as acne (acne vulgaris). According to Kampo medicinal sources, Quercus Cortex can be used in place of Pruni Cortex. In this study, we found that water extracts of Pruni Cortex, not Quercus Cortex showed a binding eŠect on estrogen receptor b (ERb). Thus, their chemical analysis was carried out by … Show more

“…The stimulatory effect of PC on estrogen secretion may be related to this increase in the number of fibroblasts, since estrogen is known to activate fibroblasts through the estrogen receptor found on fibroblasts. It has been reported that PC binds to estrogen receptor β in vitro and increases estrogen secretion from skin fibroblasts [1]. At 4 weeks after AD induction, which is the chronic phase of AD, the PC-treated mice showed a decrease in the number of inflammatory cells in the dermis and only a few fibroblasts were seen.…”

“…Pruni Cortex (PC) is obtained from Prunus jamasakura or other related plants in the family Rosaceae as a crude drug extracted from bark without the periderm [1]. Since ancient times, it has been used widely in Japanese folk medicine, including for detoxification, the treatment of eczema, and as an antitussive [2].…”

“…Kampo medicines, such as orengedokuto (Huang-Lian-Jie-Du-Tang), unseiin (WenQing-Yin), and keishibukuryogan (Gui-Zhi-Fu-Ling-Wan) have been reported to be effective for PPP [2]. Jumihaidokuto (JHT, Shi-Wei-Ba-Du-Tang in Chinese) is a traditional herbal medicine that is composed of ten medicinal plants (Kikyo (Platycodi Radix), Saiko (Bupleuri Radix), Senkyu (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bukuryo (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos), Dokkatsu (Angelicae pubescentis Radix), Bofu (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Kanzo (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Keigai (Schizonepetae Herba), Shokyo (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Bokusoku (Quercus cortex)) [3]. According to Kampo medicinal sources, Bokusoku (Quercus cortex) can be used in place of Ouhi (Pruni Cortex).…”
