Evaluation of electricity storage versus thermal storage as part of two different energy planning approaches for the islands Samsø and Orkney

Abstract: Local resources and energy production should be better integrated locally • Storages can help increase self-sufficiency and independence of islands with RES • BESS reduce import and export of electricity and can reduce fuel consumption • TES integrate excess electricity via heat pumps in a fuel-reducing and economic way • Heat pumps are important for integrating the electricity in the heating sector

“…4) is the Ballen marina located in Samsø (Denmark), where a smart energy system is being installed and tested in the framework of the Horizon2020 European research project SMILE [54]. Samsø was appointed in 1997 as Denmark's renewable energy island and has been the site for many energy innovations which are leading the island to be fossil fuel free by 2030 [56]- [58]. Today, the annual energy demand balances the annual supply from RES (sometimes the island produces more electricity than it consumes owing to offshore and onshore wind power, and a district heating based on biomass) but the island is currently not self-sufficient, yet.…”

“…Ferrari et al reviewed the studies to predict the buildings energy demand at district level. Marczinkowski and Ostergaard compared the electricity storage and thermal energy storage (TES) for different energy planning approaches. They emphasized that TES shows more advantages for all energy systems.…”
