Evaluation of efficacy of an inactivated vaccine against bovine respiratory syncytial virus in calves with maternal antibodies

Abstract: Through vaccination, it is possible to protect vulnerable calves with maternal antibodies against BRSV infection and reduce respiratory tract disease.

“…Therefore, administration of bRSV vaccines to cows in late gestation to boost antibody titers in colostrum may be a rational strategy to deal with bRSV-induced respiratory disease in young calves (1-3 months of age) in problem herds. This would eliminate the concern regarding the immunizing potential of particular parenteral vaccines in young seropositive calves, as there are conflicting data concerning the ability of currently available commercial inactivated parenteral bRSV vaccines to override maternal antibodies and stimulate protective responses, features that may be related to the vaccine formulation and adjuvant [67,68].
