Evaluation of Dry Matter, Protein, Starch, Sucrose, β-carotene, Iron, Zinc, Calcium, and Magnesium in East African Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] Germplasm

Abstract: The present study evaluated selected East African (EA) sweetpotato varieties for storage root dry matter and nutrient content and obtained information on the potential contributions of the varieties to alleviate vitamin A and mineral deficiencies. Roots obtained from 89 farmer (white- and orange-fleshed) varieties and one introduced variety (‘Resisto’) were analyzed for storage root quality using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy technology. Location differences were only significant for starch co… Show more

“…However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the establishment and regulation of these traits in sweet potato was hitherto unclear. Furthermore, the dry matter content (ranging from 18 to 42%) and starch content of the SRs varies greatly among sweet potato genotypes (Li and Zhang, 2003; Ravi et al, 2009; Tumwegamire et al, 2011), but the genetic mechanism contributing to this variation was unclear.…”

“…African sweetpotato germplasm has been repeatedly characterized as having high morphological diversity in EA (Kaledzi et al, 2010;Yada et al, 2010a;Elameen et al, 2011). Agronomic traits indicated high diversity in local EA farmer varieties (FVs) (Tumwegamire et al, 2011a).…”
