Evaluation of Cytotoxic Effect, Anti-Cholinesterase, Hemolytic and Antibacterial activities of the Species Scabiosa stellata L.

Abstract: Objective: In this study, cytotoxic effect, anticholinesterase, hemolytic and antibacterial activities of crude extracts (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol) obtained from the plant Scabiosa stellata L. were evaluated. Methods: The cytotoxicity of extracts was tested by Brine shrimp lethality method; the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity was performed using Ellman's colorimetric method and the hemolytic activity was assessed by spectrophotometric method towards human erythrocytes. Furthermor… Show more

“…The antibacterial activity of the complex "di-µ-benzoato-bis [benzoatodipyridine-cobalt (II)" with general formula Co 2 (      Benz) 2 (  Benz) 2 (Pyr) 4 was evaluated by the agar disk diffusion assay [19], against six bacterial strains. One or several colonies from each pure culture were transferred into 5 mL of nutrient broth.…”

“…With respect to Scabiosa genera, many studies indicate that species of this genus show antioxidant [42,43,46,50,52,53,56,[72][73][74][75][76][77], anti-inflammatory [50], anti-diabetic [43,78], antihepatic fibrosis [47,79,80], anti-cancer [56,81], and antibacterial [56,75,77,82,83] properties. Many species of Scabiosa grow naturally in the Mediterranean region [55,56].…”

“…Chemical modification of phytochemicals has been reported to increase the potency and selectivity against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Experimental studies show that natural compounds like quercetin, caffeic acid, and myricetin act as inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 infection (Mani et al, 2020;Mouffouk et al, 2021).…”
