Evaluation of Cytotoxic Activity Alkaloid Fractions of Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC. Fruits

Abstract: AIM: This study was carried out to investigate cytotoxic activity towards T47D, 4T1, MCF-7, HeLa, and Raji cells of alkaloid fractions of Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC. fruits. Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC. METHODS: The fruit was extracted by maceration. The ethanol extract was fractionated with liquid-liquid extraction using n-hexane, chloroform at pH 3,7, and 9 to obtained alkaloid fractions. Cytotoxic activity for fraction chloroform at pH 7 and 9 was determined with MTT assay. RESULTS: The IC50 … Show more

“…Previous studies showed the potency of Z. acanthopodium as an antioxidant, antibacterial against human pathogens, anti-inflammatory, and antiacne (Julistiono et al 2018;Wijaya et al 2019). The potency of Z. acanthopodium against breast (T47D and 4T1), and cervical cancer cell (HeLa) lines were reported previously (Rosidah et al 2019;Satria et al 2019;Syari et al 2019). However, its potency against leukemia cancer cells has not been determined yet.…”

“…Its stem essential oil from Malaysia expressed larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae [20]. Ethanol extraction of its fruits presented anticancer activities [21]. It was reported that the essential oil extracted from the aerial part of Z. acanthopodium collected in May was rich in estragole (15.46%) and eucalyptol (10.94%) and showed larvicidal activity against the malaria mosquitoes Anopheles anthropophagus and Anopheles sinensis [22].…”

“…Benzohenanthridine and furoquinoline are alkaloid compounds present in Zanthoxylum buesgenii, which have cytotoxic effects in several cell lines. In a previous study, it was said that the fruit alkaloid fraction of Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC proven effective as anticancer against several cell lines [16]. Compound percentage and active compounds can be seen in Tables 1 and 2.…”

“…The spicy taste vibrates the taste buds and causes the tongue to feel numb [4]. Apart from being used as a cooking spice, andaliman fruit is also used as an aromatic ingredient, tonic, and to treat dysentery, while India uses it for paralysis and skin diseases such as abscesses and leprosy [16]. Local residents of Daarjeeling Himalaya, South Bengal, India also use andaliman fruit (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) as a dietary supplement, and it is also used to treat gastritis [17].…”
