Evaluation of corneal biomechanical parameters after simultaneous phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation and limbal relaxing incisions

Abstract: The CH and CRF values decreased 1 day after simultaneous cataract surgery with LRIs but soon recovered to preoperative levels, suggesting there were no significant changes in corneal biomechanical factors after 1 day. Corneal thickness may play a role in biomechanical factors even in such eyes.

“…(3) One popular approach to correct corneal astigmatism simultaneously to cataract surgery is to treat pre-existing cylinder by creating limbal relaxing incisions (LRI). (4)(5)(6) Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is another valuable option in the treatment of corneal astigmatism in cataract patients. (7) To ascertain which approach constitutes a better surgical option remains under debate.…”

“…The EI exhibited lower values at 1 and 3 months after surgery, although this difference was no longer important by 6 months after surgery. We believed that the EI trend in the LRI group may be related to cicatricial demands associated with this technique (4) ; once the cicatricial process of incisions reached completion, the outcomes in the LRI and toric IOL groups became comparable.…”

“…One way to correct astigmatism simultaneously during cataract surgery is to place limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) (2,3) . It is possible, however, that late corneal biomechanics may play an unfavorable role in refractive outcomes over time (4) . Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is another valuable option for astigmatism correction in cataract patients.…”

“…Such an approach has become the most popular way to manage astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery (12,(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39) . The use of LRI offer several advantages over astigmatic incisions placed within the cornea, at smaller optical zones, including less chance of causing a shift in the resultant cylinder axis and a lesser tendency to cause irregular corneal flattening with irregular astigmatism.…”
