Evaluation of Computer Science and Software Engineering Undergraduate’s Soft Skills in Egypt from Student’s Perspective

Abstract: Soft skills for software engineers turned out to be a very important factor in the success of any project helping the team's dynamics and performance. Conversely, computer science undergraduates are possibly not aware of the importance of soft skills for their careers. Accordingly this paper's main purpose is to highlight the gaps that exist for computer science graduates in Egypt. In this paper we present a simplified systematic literature review approach for this topic. A survey is conducted in Hellwan Unive… Show more

“…The first component comprised of 17 factors (skills; of 35 total) and explaining 52.0% of the variation in the analysis (Table 2). Our results mirrored those of other studies (Matturro, 2013;Naiem et al, 2015) in that the majority of skills valued by employers represented behavioral competencies (e.g., functioning as part of team, time management, ability to plan/organize, etc.). Students, professors, and employers were asked to provide assessments of students' competency levels across the same 35 skills.…”

“…Evidence suggests that the students perceived soft skills (and the related OBs) to be helpful for their future career as much as hard skills (and related OBs) aligning with market trend (Ahmed et al, 2012;Matturro, 2013;Radermacher & Walia, 2013). Although all three soft skills were generally perceived as important, real-world problem-solving was rated as the most important for programmers, similar to Naiem et al (2015) and Law (2016).…”

“…It was reported that female and male students performed equally, but female students earned more online achievements. In a survey with computer science and software engineering graduates, the results showed that students generally understood the importance of soft skills and that they perceived problem solving, analytical thinking and communication as the most important soft skills (Naiem, Abdellatif, & E, ). Likewise, Law () found that students preferred to be graded (to be awarded OBs) for problem solving and critical thinking.…”
