Evaluation of Chitosan Gel as Antibiotic and Photosensitizer Delivery

Abstract: This work suggests the use of chitosan gel imbued with the photosensitizer Photogem and with the antibiotic Tetraclin as a possible drug delivery system. The results reveal a decrease in the photosensitizer level of toxicity. Besides, the interaction between Photogem R and chitosan gel causes a red shift in the photosensitizer spectrum, increasing its absorption in the therapeutic window (600-700 nm). These characteristics indicate this compound as a promising natural polymer-based photosensitizer carrier for … Show more

“…Results from Ag + release indicate that silver ion releasing was continuous and prolonged with no initial burst release which agrees with other reports where chitosan was used as a vehicle to transport drugs [4][5][6][7], Fig. 2 shows that the maximum concentration was reached after one week with 21.0 70.7 mM (which corresponds to a 70% of the initial silver content).…”

“…However a vehicle to transport nanoparticles to specific sites with a sustained activity is needed; in this field, the use of hydrogels in transporting drugs has showed excellent results and one of the substances used to prepare these hydrogels is chitosan [4][5][6][7]. Chitosan is a cationic aminopolysaccharide obtained by the alkaline deacetylation of chitin, it presents several characteristics such as bioadhesivity, biodegradablility, biocompatibility, safety, non-toxicity and it promotes drug absorption.…”
