Evaluation of Catalytic Activity of Pt and Pt-Ru Catalysts for Electro-oxidation of Methanol in Acid Medium by Cyclic Voltammetry

Abstract: The cyclic voltammetric study on the electro-oxidation of methanol on 30 % Pt and 20 % Pt +10 % Ru catalysts supported on Vulcan XC-72 was carried out in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Kinetic parameters such as exchange current density, Tafel slope and heterogeneous rate constants were calculated. The 30 % Pt showed a higher apparent catalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of methanol as compared with 20 % Pt + 10 % Ru catalyst. The presence of Ru did not contribute significantly towards the apparent catalytic activit… Show more

“…Kinetic parameters like standard rate constant ( k s ) and apparent energy of activation ( E a ) and thermodynamic parameters including enthalpy (Δ H ) and entropy changes (Δ S ) were determined by studying the effect of temperature on square wave voltammograms of DOPQ at pH 7.0 using Equation 4 28. Current enhancement with rise in temperature was observed in SWVs shown in Figure 4.…”

“…The irreversibility of the oxidation processes of SMPC and SNPC was ensured from the shift in peak potential with changing scan rate. 28 The diffusion coefficient for irreversible process was calculated by using Randles-Sevcik equation. 29 The D of SMPC and SNPC with values of 5.0 × 10 −6 and 1.14 × 10 −6 cm 2 s −1 were evaluated from the measured slopes (3.91 × 10 −5 and 1.8 × 10 −5 A/(V/s) 1/2 ) of the plots of I p vs. v 1/2 .…”

“…It can be clearly noted that the electrooxidation of methanol is enhanced with increasing the scan rate of the applied potential which con¯rms that the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on Co/Cr CNFs is controlled by di®usion-controlled process. 49,50 It is noteworthy to mention that all the aforementioned results are related to 10 wt.% Cr in Cr/ Co composition. To study the e®ect of Cr content, several compositions have been prepared.…”
