Evaluation of biochemical effects of Casuarina equisetifolia extract on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress in rats. Phytochemical analysis

Abstract: Nephrotoxicity is defined as renal dysfunction that arises as result of exposure to external agents such as drugs and environmental chemicals. The present work was undertaken to carry out the phytochemical study and nephroprotective activity of methanolic extract of Casuarina equisetifolia leaves in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats. Flavonoids and phenolic acids were identified and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. Subcutaneous injection of rats with gentamicin (80 mg/kg … Show more

“…Several report suggesting a possible role of oxidative stress in gentamicin-induced kidney dysfunction [36, 42]. Depletion in the CAT, TP, and NP-SH after GM exposure has been reported in other studies suggesting that oxidative stress is one of the causes of renal injuries induced with GM toxicity in rats [43]. Several studies indicate that antioxidant enzymes, including NP-SH and CAT, are inactivated by ROS, including superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide [44, 45].…”

“…MDA products significantly increased in in vivo rat studies investigating cisplatin, colistin and gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity ( 29 , 34 , 37 ). Additionally, after exposure to mercury and cadmium in the in vivo rat model, the MDA product levels increased ( 35 , 36 ).…”
