Evaluation of beak and feather disease virus, avian polyomavirus and avian papillomavirus of captives psittacine birds in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia

Abstract: Aims: Psittacine birds such as parrots, macaws, cockatoos, lovebirds and parakeets, are widely reared as household pets or at aviary due to their attractive features. However, the status of virus-causing diseases of psittacine species in Malaysia is fairly under-documented. Therefore, this study was aimed to detect the presence of three common avian viruses that infect psittacine birds, i.e. beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avian polyomavirus and avian papillomavirus. Methodology and results: Faecal samp… Show more

“…A molecular diagnostic technique, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), was developed to detect the presence of PVs in avian species. Most PCR techniques target the L1 gene due to its highly conserved region (Padzil et al, 2021;Van Doorslaer et al, 2016).…”

“…As the name itself suggests, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) has been identified to cause severe feather loss and abnormal beak shape as the significant symptoms of this circovirus infection in parrots, similar to the goose circovirus symptoms [ 23 , 69 ]. BFDV infection is the most common viral disease affecting parrots, highly transmittable horizontally and vertically to more than 60 different species of psittacine [ 70 ].…”
