Evaluation of Arm Anthropometry for Assessing Pediatric Body Composition: Evidence from Healthy and Sick Children

Abstract: Arm anthropometry is used as a proxy of body composition in clinical and field research but its validity has not been established in children. To address this issue, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and triceps skinfold thickness (TS) were measured in 110 healthy children aged 4.4 -13.9 y (55 boys) and 49 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients aged 8.1-13.4 y (22 boys). Reference values were arm and whole-body fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry and four-component model, respec… Show more

“…On the other hand, the percentage of body fat in the studied female adolescents was higher than the body fat content found in a group of Italian girls [Turconi et al, 2006], German female adolescents [Schaefer et al, 1998] and in the US Caucasian young girls [Ellis, 2000]. Chomtho et al [2006] has also shown that arm anthropometry, including AMA, is useful for predicting FM. However, in the present study the correlation coefficient between % FM and AMA was low (r=0.33; p<0.0001).…”

“…The details of these measurements in our laboratory have been described previously. 30 The data on weight, body volume and total body water were used to calculate fat mass and lean mass (used here synonymously with fat-free mass), using the 4-component model. 31 …”

“…Several studies have shown the direct association of disease, biochemical changes, and nutritional status with upper-arm composition. 13,14 The NF1 nutritional status assessment is relevant, because features of this disease as underweight or short height can influence patients' health and quality of life. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the body composition of NF1 adult patients.…”
