Evaluation of Antioxidant and Hepatoprotective Activities of Moringa oleifera Lam. Leaves in Carbon Tetrachloride-Intoxicated Rats

Abstract: The antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of the extract of Moringa oleifera leaves were investigated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Hepatotoxic rats were treated with ethanol extract of Moringa oleifera for a period of 60 days at the following three dose levels; 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight/day, orally. The activities were studied by assaying the serum marker enzymes like SGOT, SGPT, GGT, LDH, ALP, ACP, as well as total bilirubin, total protein and albumin in serum concomitantly with… Show more

“…3 Traditional folklore, oral history and native materia medica have associated Moringa oleifera with a range of medicinal, nutritional and miscellaneous applications. 4 Medicinally, the antioxidant, wound healing, hypotensive, and diuretic effects of this plant have been reported. [5][6][7] Nutritionally, the plant has been reported to be rich in calcium which boosts milk production in lactating mothers.…”

“…Thus, exploring a plant for its bioactive components from different regions of the world, in search of new active principles, always holds significance. There are scanty reports on the identification of metabolites of M. oleifera from Rajasthan, which focus only on pods and in vivo antioxidant activity (Paliwal et al 2011;Mathur and Kamal 2012;Singh et al 2014). The present work was undertaken to investigate and compare the phytochemicals and antioxidant potential of plant parts (Flower, bark and leaves) of M. oleifera from Rajasthan.…”

“…The reduction in the levels of these parameters toward the respective normal values by Moringa oleifera is an indication of the stabilization of plasma membranes as well as repair of hepatic tissue damage caused by INH/RIF [40]. The administration of silymarin decreased serum AST and ALT activities as compared to the hepatotoxic rats [26].…”
