Evaluation of Antioxidant Activities of Water Extract from Microwave Torrefied Oak Wood

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro potential of water extract from torrefied oak wood as a natural antioxidant. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was assessed by employing different in vitro assays, including reducing power, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)], and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant potential) assays. The DPPH activity of the extract was increased in a dosedependent manner. Measurement of total flavonoid cont… Show more

“…Plants contain a wide variety of constituent compounds, many of which exhibit antibacterial (Ham et al, 2020), antifungal (Adfa et al, 2020;Jang et al, 2012;Lee et al, 2021;Yoon and Kim, 2023), anti-inflammatory (Myeong et al, 2023;Yang et al, 2019), and antioxidant effects (Lee et al, 2021;Nam et al, 2018;Yang et al, 2022). Coicis Semen, the seeds of the Coix lacryma-jobi plant, is a traditional medicinal herb commonly used in East Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Korea.…”

“…Free radicals are highly unstable chemical species with an unpaired electron in their outermost shell [ 1 ]. They are essential in many biological processes; at low to moderate amounts, free radicals regulate and maintain homeostasis [ 2 ].…”

“…Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are currently predominantly used because of their high stability, efficacy and availability [ 6 ]. However, they have been reported to be costly and to have undesirable side effects [ 1 ]. Therefore, health concerns and high costs of synthetic antioxidants have sparked an interest in natural antioxidants, particularly those of plant origin [ 7 , 8 ].…”
