Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Cissus quadrangularis L. stem extracts against Avian Pathogens and Determination of its Bioactive Constituents using GC-MS

Abstract: The current study evaluates the antimicrobial activity and characterizes the chemical constituents of stems of Cissus quadrangularis L. using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS). The disc diffusion method was employed to determine the antimicrobial activity of methanol, ethanol, aqueous and petroleum ether extracts of Cissus quadrangularis stems against avian microorganisms viz. Escherichia sp., Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp, Staphylococcus sp., Pasturella sp. and Aspergillus sp. were isolated fr… Show more

Cyclopentaneundecanoic acid, methyl ester (antimicrobial [65,87]), 12-methyl-E,E-2,13-octadecadien-1-ol (anti-microbial and antifungal agent [87,88]), and 2-piperidinone, N-[4-bromo-n-butyl]-(antimicrobial and an-tioxidant [80]) were emitted by UPJ, while 6-methylenebicyclo [3.2.0] hept-3-en-2-one (antiparasitic [77,89]) was emitted by UPS. However, the compounds were not found in the PYLCV-infected plants.…”

“…Urs-12-en-24-oic acid, 3-oxo-, methyl ester is categorized into boswellic acids used widely as anti-inflammatory agents, including as an anti-cancer treatment. Additionally, the boswellic acids have potent anti-cancer efficacy against diverse malignant cancers [ 49 , 50 ]. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of 24 targets suggested that a total of 20 signaling pathways were involved in cancer occurrence and development.…”

“…C. aralioides which remains green throughout the year with branches and roots without any originality [5] is used in the traditional medicine in Cameroon as anti‐microbial and toxicological remedies against pathogenic microorganisms of the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts [6] . Interest in giving scientific authentication and explanation to the biological activities of plants used in traditional medicines enforce their phytochemical and pharmacological investigations [4,7] . Bioactivity assays and isolation of various compounds have been carried out in a number of species from the genus Cissus and had shown impressive results [8,9] .…”

“…[6] Interest in giving scientific authentication and explanation to the biological activities of plants used in traditional medicines enforce their phytochemical and pharmacological investigations. [4,7] Bioactivity assays and isolation of various compounds have been carried out in a number of species from the genus Cissus and had shown impressive results. [8,9] Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antioxidative, hepatoprotective properties are among the reported bioactivities, [4,[7][8][9] while the chemical constituents isolated mostly include lipids, stilbenes, terpenoids, steroids, alkaloids and phenolic compounds.…”
