Evaluation of antifungal and antibacterial activities of monoesters of succinic anhydride

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Monoester of succinic acid (1-29), synthesised and characterised at our laboratory, were investigated with reference to their antifungal and antibacterial activities. The results concluded that though almost all the compounds were bioactive but the degree of activity was dependent over the substituent attached to benzyl group and order of their bioactivity was iodo > chloro > methoxy > nitro substituted monoesters against the considered microbes.

“…The obtained mixture was subjected to separation on column chromatography using mixture of n-hexane-ethyl acetate (1:0 → 0:1) to get thirty fractions . The fractions (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) were combined and re-chromatographed on preparative thin layer chromatography using n-hexane-ethyl acetate mixture (4:6) as an eluent which yielded colourless amorphous solid pure compounds . Recording UV, IR, 1 H NMR and 13 C-NMR, analysis and mass measurement, characterized the target substrates 7 .…”
