Evaluation of acute toxicity and gastroprotective activity of curcuma purpurascens BI. rhizome against ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats

Abstract: BackgroundCurcuma purpurascens BI. is a medicinal plant from the Zingiberaceae family, which is widely used as a spice and as folk medicine. The aim of the present study is to investigate the gastroprotective activity of C. purpurascens rhizome hexane extract (CPRHE) against ethanol- induced gastric ulcers in rats.MethodsAcute toxicity test was carried out on 36 rats (18 males and 18 females) with low dose of CPRHE (1 g/kg), high dose of CPRHE (2 g/kg) and vehicle (5% Tween 20). To determine the gastroprotecti… Show more

“…Additionally, no differences in body weights were observed for both sex SD rats. These findings corroborate previous studies [18–20]. Our data suggest that C. barometz hair extract has high free-radicals scavengings and antioxidant activities in vitro.…”

“…However, the down-regulation of Heat shock protein expression appeared in the ulcer control animals as a gastric injury marker. This is consistent with the results from other studies [20, 46]. Up-regulation of HSP70 protein in the stomach wall mucosa in animals pre-fed with C. barometz hair extract may stop the initiation of damage to the gastric epithelium upon exposure to absolute alcohol [23, 32].…”

“…The data established that C. barometz extract has potent antioxidant activities and free radical scavenging effects in vitro. Similarly, the herbal medicine has antioxidant efficiency and causes neutralization of free radicals as reported by several co-researchers 38–41…”

“…Our data found that LMCS significantly inhibited MPO activity and restored it to normal levels from 7 day, which was earlier than OMZ form 14 day. The reason for this discrepancy could be related to the good antiinflammatory of chitosan and sepia ink 18 .…”

“…The mechanisms of ethanol-induced gastric ulcer mainly includes breaking the mucosal barrier, back diffusion of acid, increased gastric mucosal permeability and depletion of certain oxygen free radical scavengers 18 . Also, metabolism of ethanol also releases free radicals 19 .…”
